Using my Grandma's name

Hi all
If my baby (25 weeks at the mo!) is a girl, we really want to use my late Grandma's name which was Alma. I also love the name Rose but I'm not sure how to pair it... I feel like Alma Rose flows better, but Rose is maybe a better first name for a little girl? Does Rose Alma work? (I expect we might use Rosie as a nickname either way)

Also there was a famous violinist in the war called Alma Rose with an accent on the 'e' of Rose - she was Jewish and a captive in auschwitz who directed an orchestra to entertain the nazi captives. Is it weird to use this, or is the link obscure enough?

Or do we use a different first name and keep Alma as a middle name, and save Rose for if we have another girl?! Surname is three syllables so don't want to use very long names.

Thoughts please!

( and please don't be mean about Alma if you don't like it, my grandma was an awesome lady and I really love the name)
Thanks folks xx

My lovely aunt was Alma!! Go for it. What about Alma Rosie? But Rose would be fine too. .

bridgetreilly · 20/06/2017 20:51

I wouldn't worry at all about the link to the violinist, that's very obscure.

I like Alma Rose much more than Rose Alma.

If you want Alma as a middle name, try:

Violet Alma
Juliet Alma
Jenny Alma
Katie Alma

I feel like Alma Rose flows better, but Rose is maybe a better first name for a little girl

But she will only be a little girl for a fraction of her life. Think of it as naming an adult.

OSETmum · 20/06/2017 21:00

Alma Rose sounds lovely. Although my phone tried to autocorrect it to Alan... 😂

MiniAlphaBravo · 20/06/2017 21:01

I think if you love it then go for it. It's not popular but it's easy to pronounce and Alma Rose does sound so much prettier than Rose Alma.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 20/06/2017 21:05

Alma Rose is lovely, but if you're planning to call her Rosie anyway (if I'm reading right), then I'd go with Rose Alma. It doesn't flow quite as well as Alma Rose, but it's still nice. I don't think the flow matters all that much anyway as both names will rarely be said aloud. Plus, it's a family name, so especially doesn't matter imo.

strawberrypenguin · 20/06/2017 21:05

Alma Rose is lovely and flows much better.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/06/2017 21:15

Rose Alma Surname, I'd go with this.
Nothing wrong with Alma at all, but Rose is so lovely !

Sophronia · 20/06/2017 21:53

Love Alma! Alma Rose is nice.

DarthMaiden · 20/06/2017 21:54

Personally I love Alma Rose and especially Alma as a first name :-)

girlandboy · 20/06/2017 21:57

I had a great aunt Alma. I've never come across another one, so use it! And I agree, Alma Rose flows beautifully Smile

scrivette · 20/06/2017 21:57

Alma Rose is really pretty.

Mrsknackered · 20/06/2017 22:04

Alma Rose is a fantastic name. You've given me name jealousy a little bit.
I knew an Alma when I was younger she was a really gorgeous, strong, charismatic girl (she was only in her teens)
Go for it OP.

Yika · 20/06/2017 22:08

Alma Rose is just lovely. Much better than Rose Alma.

Alma is a beautiful name, unusual these days and yet well known and very simple. I think it's a great choice and all the more do if naming after your grandmother.

Mrsknackered · 20/06/2017 22:08

Ps you don't need to use the NN Rosie if she was Alma as I'm sure a NN will form from that alone.

user1471547428 · 20/06/2017 22:12

Really like Alma Rose. The violinist sounds like a good namesake too but I don't think you need to worry that many people will have heard of her.

Ipsie · 20/06/2017 22:14

I was known by my middle name until an adult. It's not unusual to for middle names to be used. The benefit of two names is the choice it gives the child as they grow.

HelenaJustina · 20/06/2017 22:18

Alma Rose is gorgeous
Completely agree with the poster who said you need to think beyond 'cute for a toddler'
Alma is underused and classic

Elmo230885 · 20/06/2017 22:18

Alma rose is lovely. I had a great auntie Alma, my grandmas sister. I used my grandmas name as a middle name, Iris.

Alma Rose flows better than Rose Alma.

And

Alma is a MUCH nicer name than Rose.

So I vote Alma for first name.

GU24Mum · 20/06/2017 22:20

If you want to use Rose as her actual name, I'd put it first tbh as otherwise she'll spent ages having to explain why she's Miss/Ms A Smith when she's called Rose.

Also, it slightly depends on your surname. If she's going to be Rose Alma Evans, that's a bit of a mouthful with two vowels but if she's going to be Rose Alma Johnson, that's a much better flow.

wizzler · 20/06/2017 22:20

Alma Rose is a beautiful name

firawla · 20/06/2017 22:23

Alma Rose is such a beautiful name, you hardly come across little Almas but that is gorgeous, I'm surprised there aren't more of them with the older style names coming back in. Alma rose flows much better than the other way round

newtlover · 20/06/2017 22:25

Alma Rose is lovely and suits all ages
Rose Alma is also nice but maybe not quite so much- Alma I would prefer as being a proper name yet unusual. The violinist link will strike relatively few people but those for whom it is relevant will be really struck by it and maybe wonder what the connection is- but it's not a bad connection so I wouldn't let that worry you.
