Using my Grandma's name

Hi all
If my baby (25 weeks at the mo!) is a girl, we really want to use my late Grandma's name which was Alma. I also love the name Rose but I'm not sure how to pair it... I feel like Alma Rose flows better, but Rose is maybe a better first name for a little girl? Does Rose Alma work? (I expect we might use Rosie as a nickname either way)

Also there was a famous violinist in the war called Alma Rose with an accent on the 'e' of Rose - she was Jewish and a captive in auschwitz who directed an orchestra to entertain the nazi captives. Is it weird to use this, or is the link obscure enough?

Or do we use a different first name and keep Alma as a middle name, and save Rose for if we have another girl?! Surname is three syllables so don't want to use very long names.

Thoughts please!

( and please don't be mean about Alma if you don't like it, my grandma was an awesome lady and I really love the name)
Thanks folks xx

Alma is lovely. The only other person I've known of with this name is the musical prodigy Alma Deutscher who must be around 12 now. Rose is lovely too.

Thanks everyone for all the lovely comments. I had a great auntie Rose who was a nurse
in the war so whichever way around she will be named after two epic ladies! I am leaning towards the Alma Rose order definitely.

Alma Rose is beautiful!

littlemissM92 · 21/06/2017 07:12

Alma rose definitely sounds better how do you feel about double barrelled names then she would be called both always?

blahthisistoohard · 21/06/2017 07:50

Alma Rose flows really nicely and is the better option imo. Alma is more unusual and I think would really suit a little girl as well as an adult.

Even if you chose another name to save Rose for next time, I think whatever name you chose Rose would always flow better as a middle name, it just really seems to flow well as a middle name no matter what you pair it with!

blahthisistoohard · 21/06/2017 07:51

Oh and the link to Auschwitz- no way on earth anyone is going to make that link!

londonloves · 21/06/2017 09:58

I have thought about double barrelling but I'm not crazy about hyphenation, not sure why I thin perhaps because -Rose and -May names are super popular these days. Can I double barrel without the hyphen or is that a bit naff?

And thanks again for all the lovely comments. Alma is great isn't it?! My grandma would be so chuffed. It will help to make up for how sad I am that she will never meet her great grandchild.

Alma is lovely and unusual.

It's also incredibly special and personal to you.

Alma Rose is a beautiful name. I know 2 Alma's. One very well, she is an exceptionally lovely and vivacious child!

vincentaroony · 21/06/2017 18:55

Never met an Alma, it's very pretty and memorable. I think it's a strong name on its own with Rose as a middle name. Don't double barrel! It will lose the elegance. Allie is a sweet nickname.

PunkOfParis · 21/06/2017 19:00

Alma Rose is beautiful Envy

Is it pronounced a bit like Elma or Ulma iyswim? I prefer the Elma pronunciation . Thanks

PunkOfParis · 21/06/2017 19:02

'U'lma like 'AL' in Almod or like Elma the story ?

londonloves · 21/06/2017 19:35

My grandma's name was pronounced with a strong Al like Alcapone!

I think that's a lovely idea.
Alma Rose goes better Smile

Alma Rose is a beautiful name.

ChorusLine69 · 21/06/2017 19:48

Alma Rose is a beautiful name - I'd go for that, so nice that it is meaningful to you and your family too

Kittykatmacbill · 21/06/2017 20:22

Alma is lovely, don't double barrel it with something as meh as rose.

Ojoj1974 · 21/06/2017 20:29

Alma Rose is a beautiful name x

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2017 20:40

I go for Alma Rose Surname, known as Alma.
No nn.
Rose is a pretty name, as is Rosie but Alma has the family connection and is unusual without being odd. It makes me think of Alma Sedgwick but I know a really lovely woman called Alma too.

SparkyBlue · 21/06/2017 20:50

Alma Rose is beautiful. It's really unusual. I definitely wouldn't let the story of the violinist put you off. In fact it would give me more reason to use the name.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 21/06/2017 20:58

Alma is very beautiful, especially with the family connection.
And alma rose? She was a brave and extraordinarily talented musician- a great name sake- not that you have to tell anyone.

chumpchange · 21/06/2017 21:01

Alma Rose is an absolutely gorgeous name.

Alma stands alone as a first name, don't double barrel (with or wo hyphen).

PunkOfParis · 21/06/2017 21:25

"My grandma's name was pronounced with a strong Al like Alcapone!"

Perfect! Beautiful name x

Rockhopper81 · 21/06/2017 21:44

Alma is beautiful! Smile

I would have Rose as he middle name, no hyphenated first name.

I also think Alma is cute for a toddler - I have a picture in my head of a cute little one with an impish smile! Grin

I would love to use my grandmothers name if I ever had a daughter (would probably go for her middle name though - her first is now considered really dated, not in the 'it's come back round into fashion' way). I think it's lovely that you want to represent your family history. Smile

NotUser123 · 22/06/2017 01:25

I actually really love Alma Rose! It just sounds so classic and elegant, like the sort of name I can envision seeing as the headline on piano recitals, IYSWIM.
