Which do you prefer for a little girl? Big brother is Rupert.

Miranda. TBH it's because i'm a little biased. 'Mireena' is a brand of contraceptive implant/coil, so puts me off Marina, which sounds very similar.

DramaAlpaca · 20/06/2017 23:11

I like Marina very much, but I live near a boat marina so I couldn't use it.

Miranda goes really well with Rupert.

VintagePerfumista · 21/06/2017 07:02

Both are Shakespearean names.

I associate Miranda a) with the dreadful "comedian" and b) as part of the Martha-Matilda-Madeleine group of middle class M names.

I'd go with Marina as it is very pretty, not as used as the trio of Ms up there and seems younger somehow.

You also need to factor in that Miranda will undoubtedly end up being Mirrie.

They are both lovely. If I had to choose, then maybe Miranda.

NameChange30 · 22/06/2017 05:51

Miranda

A marina is where the boats are moored in a coastal town!

Interesting that opinions are so divided on this thread!

I've loved the name Marina for years. I remember a scandal involving a minor royal years and years ago involving a Marina so I do associate it as a fairly aristocratic name, which does go well with Rupert.

OhTheRoses · 22/06/2017 06:10

Marina. My grandma was Alice Marina.

OhTheRoses · 22/06/2017 06:11

Have you thought about Davina?

allegretto · 22/06/2017 06:14

Miranda

A marina is where the boats are moored in a coastal town!

So what, it's not an unpleasant or embarrassing association. The name comes from Romance languages meaning coast or seashore.

NameChange30 · 22/06/2017 10:31

It's a perfectly pleasant word, but I wouldn't use it to name my child. If other people would, that's up to them.

CrownOfPrawns · 22/06/2017 10:39

It was a name long before it became a term for a harbour.

NameChange30 · 22/06/2017 10:46

So? I still wouldn't use it.
But as I said, each to their own.

VintagePerfumista · 22/06/2017 11:01

And "miranda" means "something (nice) to look at"

Alice Marina is lovely, Roses, and so is Marina Alice.

I remember the Marina Ogilvy scandal. Funny that back then we all knew who these minor royals were and how shocking it was. No-one would bat an eyelid now!

Marina, hate Miranda Heart
