Darren seems to be a MN hatred and I was wondering why? I wasn't around in the 70s so that might be why

My best friends dh is a Darren, we all secretly love him as hes the man to call when you have a diy disaster, it does help that hes a builder. Where i used to live i had a Dave for these problems, everybody needs a Darren....or a Dave 😆

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/06/2017 07:05

Like a pp, I only know two Darren's and they are both quite posh. Private school education and great jobs.

I don't think it's time for a Darren, Karen, Sharon revival yet though.

EccentricPickle · 18/06/2017 07:12

If I had been a boy my Dad wanted to call me Darren.

I don't mind the name - there were a couple that I knew of as a teen. They were normal, good looking boys.

zen1 · 18/06/2017 07:12

The Darren in my junior school in the early 80s was the only boy in the school to have an earring.

CPtart · 18/06/2017 07:28

DS 12 had a Darren in his class last year. When he bothered to show up at school he often didn't even take his school bag.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 18/06/2017 07:31

I went out with a Darren for a bit. He was born in 1969 and the sex was amazing

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/06/2017 09:08

Darren is much nicer than Darrell.

howthelightgetsin · 18/06/2017 09:59

Ugh I just grimaced reading that name.
I really can't see Darren coming. Not all names come back.
Every Darren I knew was awful.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 18/06/2017 10:05

There's nothing wrong with Darren as such (if you are a UK male aged 40-50) but you wouldn't choose it for a baby now because it is so dated. The same reason you wouldn't call a baby Jason, Gary or Wayne.

It is definitely the male equipment of Sharon or Tracey

Peanutbuttercheese · 18/06/2017 10:31

I had a friend called Darren at school he was a real good looking bad boy. I always remember his final school report saying he should have got a string of O levels but wouldn't due to attitude. He had a Mother who could have had a spot on Jeremy Kyle these days. He had an awful home life. Poor Darren never had a chance in life.

MikeUniformMike · 18/06/2017 14:48

I quite like it. It became a victim of its own success.

OhTheRoses · 18/06/2017 14:52

I used to catch the train with the eldest of three boys: Shaun, Wayne and Darren. Darren did best in life. They were ok. Not very well supported at home.

2cats2many · 18/06/2017 14:56

I know two lovely Darrens. I'm a child of the 70s by the way.

OuchBollocks · 18/06/2017 15:06

This man.

Why is this name hated so much?
BlahBlahBlahEtc · 18/06/2017 15:06

Ahh I fancied the pants off some one when I was in school who was called Darren Grin

I had to rewrite this as it made me sound like a paedophile

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/06/2017 15:39

There was a thread on here recently where a new young employee was called Darren but insisted that his workmates/manager/etc called him Dazza. The general consensus was NO! :o

FizzyGreenWater · 18/06/2017 18:07

As others say, very dated to a particular decade and it's not come back 'in' yet. Twenty years ago the name Arthur would have been met by Shock and 'what like Arfur on Eastenders?'

BUT - it's also just not a very nice collection of sounds, especially in some accents! Some names just make nicer sounds than others. However that's also very subjective. For example, I hate Eli as it just seems the most whiny sound in the world to me! Others love it.

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 18/06/2017 18:29

:O I love Eli! SIL stole it

ShuttyTown · 18/06/2017 18:32

Because it's hideous

Sophronia · 18/06/2017 23:05

It's dated but taken out of that context I think it's actually quite a nice name.

weaselscanfly · 18/06/2017 23:15

Darren, for me, is in the same category as Dean, Tracey, Gary, Barry, Sharon...
Darren was my first kiss though, in 1989, with 'Strawberry Fields' playing in the background. It wasn't the worst experience of my life to date but he did kiss a bit like how I imagine a lizard would. (Think thin lips & a jabby tongue)...

UsernameInvalid66 · 20/06/2017 14:30

Darren just feels very strongly associated with people of about my age (early 50s) to me. I think when it first became popular people like my mum (who was a bit snobbish about names) thought of it as a lower class/maybe a bit thuggy name, but I've personally known more Darrens who didn't fit that stereotype than who did. An old friend of mine married a Darren who worked in a bookshop and was really quite intellectual and bohemian. I don't actually dislike it as a collection of sounds, but I don't think it's quite ready for revival yet - maybe when lots of the Darrens of my generation become grandads, it will begin to become popular again.

It sounds ugly and doesn't translate well into other languages (well, that's why I dislike it)

ThreeForAPound · 20/06/2017 15:06

Darren and Jason were the Jayden/Kayden/Brayden of the 70s and early 80s. There were several Darrens in my year at school. It's not awful, just very dated and because it was a popular/'fashionable' name at the time, it hasn't aged as a classic (yet!).
