Julian - What do you think?

I have a sudden love of this name and feel quite inspired to use it.

I think it ticks lots of boxes - nice nick name with Jules, not too popular, not unheard of, easy to pronounce and has a nice musicality to it.

Downsides - is it perceived as a bit pompous?

To me Julian will always be the overbearing mysoginist racist who leads the famous 5 into peril at every opportunity.

Sometimes I call DH Julian when he comes out with some Enid Blyton phrase in everyday conversation. (I say, you are a brick etc).

2014newme · 04/06/2017 17:38

Oh no the horror of shortening it to jules 😯

Chickenagain · 04/06/2017 17:48

Lovely name - I know two, both ravishing!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/06/2017 17:48

I think it's great, really strong. Also agree that potential for diminutives is good.

EmmyInTheSticks · 04/06/2017 19:04

Thank you for the comments. I'm pleased it's overall positive. I like Julius too but I worry it's a bit of a big name to live up to and Julian is a bit safer.

I like that it will work in a lot of languages too. DD's name works well in a lot of Europe and I think Julian probably also does.

It's a really lovely name - go for it. Smile

SuperBeagle · 04/06/2017 21:19

I love Julian.

Jules or Jude for short.

I've only ever known one.

squoosh · 05/06/2017 11:17

It's a bit wet and it reminds me of the obnoxious twat from the Famous Five.

I prefer Julius.

Lancelottie · 05/06/2017 11:20

I know a Julian who is a very kind and brilliant musician.

I think it's probably compulsory to be a musician with a name like Julian. Off the top of my head, I can think of three we know well, plus Julian Lloyd-Webber (who we don't).

squoosh · 05/06/2017 11:22

To me Julian will always be the overbearing mysoginist racist who leads the famous 5 into peril at every opportunity.

You just know he turned out to be a Ukipper. I bet Dick, George and Anne went NC. Fanny and Quentin probably tried to ditch him too.

liquidrevolution · 05/06/2017 11:53

Its nice but reminds me of the pompous twat from the Famous Five.

YouWhatMate · 05/06/2017 11:54

Julian is pompous, to me. And really weak. As mumsnet users like to say, "it's a bit wet".

Barefoot789 · 05/06/2017 11:55

Sorry I don't like it, it's in the same box as Adrian for me. Wet and drippy.

YouWhatMate · 05/06/2017 11:56

I like that it will work in a lot of languages too

Probably worth noting that in most European languages it would be pronounced like "Julianne".

Mumchance · 05/06/2017 12:00

I love Julian as a girl's name after the batshit but interesting Julian of Norwich, but unfairly the same name on a boy makes me think of Julian 'Pompous, Middle-Aged and a Thorough Sexist Snob at Twelve' Kirrin in the Famous Five. (Agree entirely that he grew up into a UKIP local councillor and George and co have emigrated to avoid him...) Agree that Julius is nicer for a boy.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 05/06/2017 12:12

I love it. It's my dad's name and would love Julian or Julius if I had a boy next time around or Juliette if I had a girl.

grufallosfriend · 05/06/2017 12:19

Probably worth noting that in most European languages it would be pronounced like "Julianne".

Absolutely not. Julian is pronounced JOOLian with the emphasis on Jool. Only difference is that in German it is YOOLian.

Julianne is a completely different name and is pronounced JulieANNE or in German YuliAH-neh. Hope that explains it Smile

Chickenagain · 05/06/2017 13:52

I remember another Julian so three in total.

1/. Tall, good looking World Champion a few times (won't say at what - could out myself)

2/. Stunningly handsome, adventurer big & broad entrepreneur.

3/- Down to earth & ruggedly good looking.

Go for it I say!

Chickenagain · 05/06/2017 13:54

Oops. 3/ is a mechanic - usually covered in oil!

Epipgab · 05/06/2017 15:25

I like it. I know of a Julian (and yes he's musical Grin).

Not a fan of the famous Julians but it does also remind me of the Famous Five (not sure if that's a good thing or not!)

noodlebum · 05/06/2017 17:02

Not my cup of tea, sorry. It does tick the boxes though, just not my personal style. If it helps I don't know any Julians at all.

chocatoo · 05/06/2017 17:08

I think it's pretty dreadful actually, as is Jules.

UsernameInvalid66 · 05/06/2017 17:38

I think it's a bit posh sounding but that doesn't necessarily have to be a deal breaker. The main reference for me is Julian Lennon and I do like his music so I think I like rather than dislike it, it's just not one I'eve ever really thought about much.

Mumchance I love your take on Julian K - I re-read one of those books in a B&B in adulthood when there was nothing else available, and couldn't stand the way were were being blatantly told (not shown) how admirable he was on nearly every page. Nice fallible Dick was always my favourite!

Hairq · 05/06/2017 18:29

I really like it. The only downside for me is that it reminds me of Julian the mansplaining arse from the Famous Five books.

MollyHuaCha · 06/06/2017 19:19

I loved Julian in the famous five! The nine year old Molly found him so manly...
