i love it but i know it sounds a bit childish. Any full names for this so i could make it into a nickname? or any other similar names?

Too much like a dog's name. Also quite hippyish (Bob Marley) and a bit American (surname-as-firstname).
But if you like it, you could maybe use Mariana or Marianne, shortened to Marley. Or Marlene (pronounced 'Mar-LANE-ah') as in Dietrich.

mummy2pickle · 03/06/2017 22:22

We had Marley as a choice when I had dd as she was conceived in the Maldives and it's the capital (although spelt Male) but dh kept saying t reminded him of a dogs name! I've since heard girls called Marley and it's quite nice but not sure I could do it now

SuperBeagle · 03/06/2017 22:24

I know a Marley who's 16. She could not suit the name less. You have to be quite "cool" to pull off a name like Marley, IMO, and she just doesn't carry it off.

AbernathysFringe · 03/06/2017 22:24

It's briefly been associated with a book and film about a dog.
It's been associated for a longer time with a reggae musician.
It's been associated for over a hundred years with Scrooge's ghostly visitor.

The most recent association probably will be forgotten in five years by the time they're at school. If you're okay with the other two, go for it. I'd agree that it does sound a bit hippyish and nicknamey but I went to school with a girl from a council estate called it in the early 90s, so it's not that out there.

I know a boy and a girl Marley both age 5 this year

KoolKoala07 · 03/06/2017 22:25

What about Marnie? I know an adult and a child with it.

IStoleThisUsername · 03/06/2017 22:25

I prefer Marnie

CaulkheadUpNorf · 03/06/2017 22:26

I know a few girls called Marley, aged between 8 and 13.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/06/2017 22:32

Love it. Marlene or Marlena on BC

Lemondrop99 · 03/06/2017 22:35

I love Marley for a girl.

Sophronia · 03/06/2017 22:52

It just makes me think of Bob, and the film about the dog.

MissClimpsonsTypingBureau · 04/06/2017 02:37

I've seen it spelt Marlie which I think is rather glamorous in an old-Hollywood kind of way and definitely not just a little-girl name.

mathanxiety · 04/06/2017 02:40

I really like it.

I like the Marlie spelling suggested by MissClimpsonsTypingBureau.

(As a point of reference, I also like Carly, Romy, Marlowe..)

Flowerdew2 · 04/06/2017 04:18

I like it, makes me think of Marley King (Level 42 bassist's daughter). Sweet name.

MumBod · 04/06/2017 07:28

I was a secondary school teacher until very recently.

In every school I worked in there was always a group of boys who were fascinated by Bob Marley and his penchant for weed.

She'll get fed up of being teased about 'ganja', trust me.

It made teaching 'A Christmas Carol' very tedious Hmm

ColourfulOrangex · 04/06/2017 07:31

I like it OP

MammieBear · 04/06/2017 08:04

I agree with suggestions of Marnie. X

GetAHaircutCarl · 04/06/2017 09:12

I met a Harley recently, and it suited her. A bit cool, but pretty.

Any good as an alternative?

Nzou1050 · 04/06/2017 09:13

What about Mahlia?

MyCalmX · 04/06/2017 09:14

I know a Marlee. It's grown on me but at first I did think of the movie about the dog.

Jooni · 04/06/2017 09:39

No, it's not silly at all! Not my personal favourite but a fine name.

The only other "full" name for Marley I can think of is Marlowe, which is quite cool.

MadameJosephine · 04/06/2017 10:26

Not at all, I know a little Marley at DD's nursery

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 04/06/2017 10:28

I prefer Marnie too and know one who is in her 20s. Lovely name.

UsaNayme · 04/06/2017 12:22

I think Marley for a girl is more popular in America

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2017 15:19

How about Malia shortened to Mali?
