Zora?

DD is due soon, and I just wanted to gather the general consensus on the name Zora (after Zora Neale Hurston - Their Eyes Were Watching God).
The dh and I love it, but the other family members, namely parents, don't seem too thrilled. I am also a little afraid it is too similar to Zara or that it might come across a bit techy, if that makes any sense.
Last name starts with a P and is also a boys name and green holiday.

It sounds like a drug to me, honestly.

SummerRayne17 · 14/05/2017 06:28

Or a cleaning pregnant product....sorry!

AvengingGerbil · 14/05/2017 06:29

Sister of Zorro

Gallavich · 14/05/2017 06:32

I read zoflora at first glance

spacecowboy99 · 14/05/2017 06:47

First thought here also Zoflora. Might mostly be a mumsnet thing though and not something everyone would think IRL.

Oysterbabe · 14/05/2017 06:47

I really don't like it. I get that it's a real name but it sounds made up.

heateallthebuns · 14/05/2017 06:51

I'm not keen either. It sounds like mis pronounced/spelled Zara. Child will have to correct people every day.

katonic · 14/05/2017 06:58

I teach a Zohra, think that spelling looks a bit more elegant perhaps? Less zoflora!

happydays2017 · 14/05/2017 07:00

YY to Zohra spelling!

Itsmekathy · 14/05/2017 07:04

Never heard of it and don't like it sorry.

The Zara thread is very positive.

TinfoilHattie · 14/05/2017 08:47

Zara is a great name, Zora not so much.

Thatextrainch · 14/05/2017 08:49

I'm in the minority as I live it. I was at school with a Bosnian Zuhra which is pronounced very similary

Jooni · 14/05/2017 08:52

Wtf is this zoflora that I see mentioned on MN so much?!

I like Zora. I'm a Russian speaker and it means "dawn" - lovely. It also has a strong, pretty sound and ZNH is a great namesake.

If you don't mind people mistaking it for more well-known Zara from time to time, then go for it!

Yika · 14/05/2017 08:54

I love it, very simple and unusual and a great namesake. And although unusual it passes the 'OK to be screamed across a crowded playground/park/supermarket aisle'test.

Yika · 14/05/2017 08:55

Ps Goes perfectly with the surname.

mammmamia · 14/05/2017 09:03

Zohra is a Muslim name, spelt like that it's lovely.
How about Zorah? That looks nice as well.

Bananice · 14/05/2017 09:13

Randomly I heard of the name Zora(h?) for the first time today - the daughter of a Muslim family. I love the name: it is strong and has so much character. Go for it OP

ASDismynormality · 14/05/2017 09:14

I went to school with a Zohra, it's a lovely name.

olderthanyouthink · 14/05/2017 09:27

I think it sounds ok but the spelling is what's iffy

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 14/05/2017 09:30

Strong, pretty & easy to say & spell. All good!

CricketRuntAndRashers · 14/05/2017 09:43

Love it! Gorgeous name :) I work with a lovely woman named Zora.

Also reminds me of the book The Outsiders of Uskoken Castle, which I used to love as a child.

CricketRuntAndRashers · 14/05/2017 09:48

Zora Neale Hurston comes to mind as well.

Fabulous name :)!

Kazzawazza69 · 14/05/2017 11:25

I like it x

CrazedZombie · 14/05/2017 11:28

Looks much prettier with the h. So Zorah or Zohra not Zora.

Zora looks like sister of Zorro, misspelled Zara and Zoflora.

MissHavishamsleftdaffodil · 14/05/2017 11:33

Really sorry, I read Zoflora as well.
