Zora?

DD is due soon, and I just wanted to gather the general consensus on the name Zora (after Zora Neale Hurston - Their Eyes Were Watching God).
The dh and I love it, but the other family members, namely parents, don't seem too thrilled. I am also a little afraid it is too similar to Zara or that it might come across a bit techy, if that makes any sense.
Last name starts with a P and is also a boys name and green holiday.

I knew a sweet little girl once called Zora. Her mum was German. It is a nice unusual name.

The Zora I know is from the German part of Switzerland.

Maybe it's a really popular name in German speaking places?

allthingslipsticks · 14/05/2017 21:26

It's a character from Dungeons and Dragons, the cartoon.

Maybe have it as a middle name?

Kittykatclaws · 14/05/2017 21:30

I like Zoya, not so much Zora as PP said reminds me of Zoflora.

Kittykatclaws · 14/05/2017 21:30

Or how about Zorana?

DianeSelwyn · 14/05/2017 21:31

I love it as a name, but do prefer it spelled Zorah

kittytom · 14/05/2017 21:32

Interesting quiet! I have just googled it and it is a Slavic name meaning dawn (as a pp says) so that would explain it being popular in German speaking countries I guess.

I want to read The Outsiders of Uskoken Castle now.

Sophronia · 14/05/2017 22:40

How about Zoya or Zina instead?

mammmamia · 15/05/2017 00:02

Really don't like Zoya, OP add the H and go for Zorah or Zohra!

DramaAlpaca · 15/05/2017 00:10

Zora is OK, but the addition of an H, either Zorah or Zohra, makes it much nicer.

I do prefer Zara though.

High five Legarmpits

FizzyGreenWater · 15/05/2017 12:42

Zara is just so much nicer, that's the trouble!

Agree the spelling is also part of the issue. Zohra/Zorah are better.

I loved that book so much. Just looked it up, the book was originally written in German (By, according to wiki, a German, Jewish communist living in exile in Switzerland).

Maybe that's why the name Zora could potentially be more popular in Germany and Switzerland than the UK?

Zorana and Zorka are other versions of the name, according to behindthename, at least ;)
