Hi, she is 5 weeks now and I'm seriously struggling... :(

We both like Madeleine (yay!) and also like Maddie, but we only like it with the NN Maddie, so is it a bad choice? She would be Maddie DTD, so introduced as Maddie (Maddie would be her "known as" name at school too, until old enough to decide obviously!) and we know she would most likely get Mads/Mad occasionally too and we can deal with that, but what do you think!?

Oh I love Adeline!

Yika · 06/05/2017 20:35

Lovely name.

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 06/05/2017 20:38

Madeleine
The well known one was a lovely little girl so why not?

loverofbadtv · 06/05/2017 20:42

Don't let the bad connotations ruin the name! It's a beautiful name! Go for it!!

Empireoftheclouds · 06/05/2017 20:49

I'm baffled you would introduce a child as one name and have another on her bc

If you want her to be known as maddie, call her Maddie

CricketRuntAndRashers · 06/05/2017 20:51

Lovely biscuits. Sure, why not? It's nice.

Miniminimus · 06/05/2017 20:52

Lovely name, I know an adult one and a teen one and seems not to date. Adult is always full name. Teen was in DS class and , only ever called Maddie. Lovely both ways.

LovingLola · 06/05/2017 20:53

Is it only on MN that people pick a name and then immediately introduce a nickname?

2014newme · 06/05/2017 21:06

@Lovinglola yes! Choosing nicknames is weird as well, they evolve. But i think the op in fact means a shortened version of the name rather than a nickname.

StevieNicksRhiannon · 06/05/2017 22:11

OP,

Madeleine is a beautiful, timeless name. Smile

I know a 3 yr old Madeleine, (and a 5 yr old Madeleina , which is also pretty).

They're both only ever called by their full names, so shortened versions aren't inevitable.

Empireoftheclouds · 06/05/2017 22:21

They're both only ever called by their full names, so shortened versions aren't inevitable well they kind of are in this case as the OP will be using the shortened version

StevieNicksRhiannon · 06/05/2017 22:51

Empire,

Fair point!

I suppose I meant more generally, as it's often an assumption that longer names get automatically shortened. Or that the initially-used version remains set, even when the child's older...

e.g. friend of mine is Gabriella, was referred to by parents from day 1 as "Gabi", but she decided at age 4ish that she liked her full name best. Has only ever been that since (even to her parents!).

Lemondrop09 · 06/05/2017 22:57

I think Madeleine is beautiful and it was top of my girls list (but I'm having a boy!)

I'm personally not keen on Maddy, so might have likely shortened it to Lainey. But I think Maddy is the most likely shortening, so it's good you like that too. Go for it, it's a great name

Sophronia · 07/05/2017 00:01

I like Madeleine but not Maddie.

Joeybee · 07/05/2017 01:43

Congratulations!
I think Madeleine, Maddie, is fantastic. Tbh I don't think people would shorten Maddie down any more as it is a nn name anyway.

CatCircle · 07/05/2017 07:31

Yup they will defo shorten Maddie to 'Mads'. True nns seem to be 1-syllable round here.Smile

MineAreCrafty · 07/05/2017 07:39

We have a Millie and felt that had links in the past but we never think about it now. Go for it.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 07/05/2017 07:43

Great name, great shortening. Go for it.

Ecureuil · 07/05/2017 07:48

Lovely name, go for it.

Temporary2002 · 07/05/2017 07:50

I love it, reminds me of the children's books. www.madeline.com

SunshineDeLaSoul · 07/05/2017 07:52

What's her twin called?

GrumpySausage · 07/05/2017 07:55

Madeline is lovely. Go for it. I also like Madelina as mentioned by a PP

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 07/05/2017 09:21

Tbh I don't think people would shorten Maddie down any more as it is a nn name anyway

You'd be surprised Grin

SuperBeagle · 07/05/2017 09:43

I love Madeleine.

If you're worried about the McCann thing, you could always go for Madeline with the different pronunciation, like the little redhead French girl and the Madeline from the Keats poem.

I like Maddalena too (Italian), but I think it'd be a nightmare spelling/pronunciation-wise in the UK.
