Would you let this put you off a name?

Me and DH are currently expecting a baby boy and after lots and lots of deliberation the only name we can semi-agree upon is Lewis. However, the first three letters of our surname are 'Wis' and I'm worried that it will just be weird or look weird when written down: Lewis Wis.....

Our surname has 7 letters in if that makes any difference Grin

It's really bugging me to the point where I think I may have posted about this before but can't actually remember - so apologies if I have Grin Grin

My DH thinks I'm being ridiculous Grin

I wouldn't find how it looks written down an issue, I'd be more concerned about how it sounds. If the WIS part of the surname sounds like the WIS part of Lewis it would bother me.

GeillisTheWitch · 04/05/2017 09:22

It would put me off, sorry.

Only1scoop · 04/05/2017 09:22

Yes it would put me off

JaxingJump · 04/05/2017 09:25

I think it's totally fine. He may be more likely to have a permanent nickname like Lou Wis... or Louis (Lou-ee) Wis at a later date though.

It's a completely different sound. I'm tempted to give out my surname so it's easier for people to imagine the name but I'm worried about outing myself.....

I know you're struggling with names but, Yes it put me off, sorry.
Lewis Wis.... totally run in to each other.
Louie Wis.... Still doesn't roll off the tongue to but goes a lot better

Writerwannabe83 · 04/05/2017 09:34

Louie Wis.... Still doesn't roll off the tongue to but goes

I just can't bear the thought of going through years of people wrongly calling him Loo-ee instead of Lewis. I would absolutely lose my rag Grin

Loola24 · 04/05/2017 09:36

No I don't think it makes any difference. I think it flows quote well and like you say you have a long surname so it takes away from the repeat. That wouldn't bother me at all.

redmimi · 04/05/2017 09:36

I think it's more important how it sounds than reads. So Lewis Wiseman, fine. Lewis Wishaw not so much.

olderthanyouthink · 04/05/2017 09:42

I was thinking Wiseman and I think that's ok

Only1scoop · 04/05/2017 09:51

Agree red and Older

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/05/2017 09:53

If you don't like Louie. I'd definitely avoid Lewis. What if he wants to call him self that. You couldn't stop him. Its his name

Jupitertomars · 04/05/2017 09:56

I think its fine, it wouldn't put me off.

FWIW I have a friend lewis who is often called louie as a nickname.

SuperBeagle · 04/05/2017 09:59

But Lewis is never pronounced Louie? Hmm

As someone said, with Wiseman it would be fine, but with someone with the same "wis" sound as Lewis, it wouldn't.

FeralBeryl · 04/05/2017 10:00

If it changes the sound of the whole name.
For example Lewis Wishart for me would become Louie Swishart Wink but I'm in an area where people speak veryyyy quickly.

Writerwannabe83 · 04/05/2017 10:04

Surname is Wiseman Grin

Why would he want to call himself Louie, it's a completely different name? It's like a girl called Mary deciding to call herself Marie.... I just can't see why it would logically happen?

However, if he wanted to call himself Louie then I'd accept that because it's his choice....but I don't want others doing it repeatedly which they will as to my knowledge that's how Louie is pronounced.

I can't imagine anyone seeing Louie and thinking it was pronounced Lewis?

Or do you mean Louis, not Louie?

I still think people would see Louis and pronounce it Loo-ee as opposed to Lewis.

OP posts:
FeralBeryl · 04/05/2017 10:08

I meant the sound Louie in my example rather than people saying Louie if that makes sense? Confused
I think yours is fine though - definitely a Barrister/Prime Minister name Wink

JaxingJump · 04/05/2017 10:10

No, I meant that he'd possibly become Lou Wiseman and then in typical form for nicknames a 'y' gets put at the end.... so in years to come it wouldn't be strange if he ended up as Lou-y Wiseman. May never happen but it's not s big stretch!

Writerwannabe83 · 04/05/2017 10:16

I get it now jaxing Smile

As a nickname I don't think it would bother me, I just wouldn't want a lifetime of correcting the probounciation if we did spell his name as Louis instead of Lewis to avoid the whole wis/Wis issue Grin

With our current DS we have people mispronounce his name even though the spelling of his name doesn't look even look like what they wrongly call him - it's very odd. I couldn't go through it with a second child too Grin

OP posts:
EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 04/05/2017 10:29

He might end up with the nickname Wiz Grin My only point being that people often agonise on MN over nicknames, but my experience is that you end up with no control over what your child gets called by their friends. Although I do wonder what went through the minds of Neville Neville's parents. That's a genuine name by the way, late father of Tracey, Gary and Phil. It doesn't seem like they worried too much.

Personally I like your choice.

DramaAlpaca · 04/05/2017 10:31

Lewis Wiseman is perfectly fine, it wouldn't put me off at all.

If the Wis bit was the same sound as in Lewis, it would.

Go for it, it's a lovely name.

DramaAlpaca · 04/05/2017 10:33

He might end up with the nickname Wiz

Haha, my DS's nickname is Wiz or Wizzy Grin. No connection to any of his names though, just a childhood family nickname that stuck.

Writerwannabe83 · 04/05/2017 10:34

I'm glad it doesn't seem to be off-putting to the majority.

My DH will be happy as he really, really wants to call him Lewis and it's only my reticence about this issue that's been the problem Grin

OP posts:
Only1scoop · 04/05/2017 10:35

Changed mind Lewis Wiseman is perfectly acceptable Smile

CricketFishieDHAndMe · 04/05/2017 11:28

Lewis Wiseman is a great name!

Although a middle name couldn't hurt imo. Lewis Henry Wiseman, for example.
