Has Alison had it's day?

Opinions on the name Alison?

Trying very hard to think of names with DH (6 weeks to go...) and we both quite like this name but don't know if it's too dated without having the 'old school cool' feel?

It's also the name of a close family member, and the middle name of another family member who passed away recently so would have some sentimental value.

Thoughts?

I grew up with an Alison (in the 80s) and even then thought it was a bit dated

Navy, I think the reason people think it is a classic is that it is a very old name that is still recognisable and reasonably popular.

Not keen. Far too 70s and not a cool name and never was.

I do like Alice though and have only ever met one (20s.)

I prefer Alison to Alice. Bear in mind she will only be a baby for a very short time.

I have a sister called Alison, so love the name - although we never call her Alison, it's always either Ali or Al.

It's uncommon, pretty for a little girl, good for an adult.

And there are some nice Alisons out there - Moyet, Balsom and Elvis Costello wrote a song about an Alison.

thethoughtfox · 01/05/2017 09:23

Bring it back!

It's a really nice name. I know lots of 30-something Alisons and it was a name I would have liked for myself.

You should go for it. Nice to have a name that won't cause problems with pronunciation or spelling but won't be the same as everyone else in her class.

I think Ali is such a cool name.

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 01/05/2017 10:24

I prefer Alice.

But Alison is still really nice and I personally prefer it to those really cutesy names.... And I agee, Ali is a really cool nn.

FennyBridges · 01/05/2017 10:33

I really like it. If I saw 'Alison' on my register at school it would make me feel good, maybe a bit excited, after reading out all of the Chloes, Goes, Emilys, Ellies, Amys and so on.

FennyBridges · 01/05/2017 10:34

Goes = Zoes!!

SleepForTheWeek · 01/05/2017 13:32

I do like Alice but it seems to be very popular at the moment, which puts me off slightly

I like Alison. You could use Alice as a nn for Alison
