This is really weird seeing this because I just heard of someone today called Ceilidh and thought it was odd! Kayleigh is nice though!

Waddlelikeapenguin · 25/04/2017 23:44

No really no.
Elidh is lovely.

MrsJayy · 25/04/2017 23:50

Wonder is celidh is the new Skye or something it just doesn't look right though

MrsJayy · 25/04/2017 23:51

If*

HoratioNightboy · 26/04/2017 00:12

Ceilidh has been on the go as a name for more than 40 years, and there are about 150 of them in the Scottish records. I'm not a fan of the sound of "Kayleigh" myself, but I wouldn't think the spelling odd in Scotland.

Sophronia · 26/04/2017 00:28

I have heard of it as a name. I think it's nicer than Kayleigh anyway.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/04/2017 08:12

😂
Yes, I like Kayleigh.

badtime · 26/04/2017 11:19

I have met an American called Ceilidh, so you wouldn't be the first person to use it as a name.

Please don't use it as a name.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 26/04/2017 11:20

I actually really like Kayleigh. ;) I don't think there are many babies named Kayleigh nowadays. Which is probably why the name seems really fresh to me personally...

According to behindthename (no idea how reliable that website is, btw):

"Variant of KAYLEE. This is also a common Anglicized form of the Gaelic word ceilidh, a traditional social gathering and dance."

According to this the OP's idea of naming the DD Ceilidh may not be that weird? Idk, I'm not Scottish...

Justmuddlingalong · 26/04/2017 11:37

It would result in numerous spelling mistakes and spelling it out for people, for the child's entire life.

GenerationYmember · 26/04/2017 12:00

Kayleigh is awful, it's sooo 90s. (I'm born '94 and there were always a few Kayleighs about).

I much prefer Kayla or Kyla, a bit more modern.

Chavelita · 26/04/2017 12:08

The fact that Irish and Scottish Americans are capable of some really, really poor naming decisions and that American baby naming websites list completely random names and words as 'Irish' shouldn't mean anyone else should follow suit. Unless they are OK with their baby's name suggesting a dusty hall full of people fighting over the steps to the Siege of Ennis.

Kayleigh to me is very dated, though.

Mrsknackered · 26/04/2017 12:12

I actually went to school with a Ceilidh.
She was great and no one at school (except me because my mum told me) knew it was a dance and not a name.

Spongesecret008 · 26/04/2017 12:16

Some one with this name emails me. At first when I saw the emails I thought it was something to to with a scottish dance. I did not know it was a name. I do like it. I like the sound of the name and also this spelling. It is a nice name but I would always think of it as a Scottish dance rather than a name.

Chavelita · 26/04/2017 16:19

Look, if you'd balk at calling your baby 'Tea Dance' or 'Disco', 'Ceilidh' isn't a good idea.

Bleubell · 26/04/2017 16:32

I really like it. The definition is gathering but it is also used as an alternative way of spelling Kayleigh. I live in Scotland and know quite a lot of people with Gaelic spelled names. If you like it I'd say go for it ! X

Lemondrop09 · 26/04/2017 18:20

Kayleigh is nice enough but it is a bit 90s

Some other suggestions, although some of these are also a bit dated

Kayla
Keeley
Kyla
Kylie
Kacey
Katie
Kelly
Kaya
Hayley
Callie
Michaela

originalbiglymavis · 26/04/2017 18:30

God awful Marillion song. No idea how that was spelled though.

Rioja123 · 26/04/2017 18:32

A Scottish dance isn't it?

thatgirlcalledkyle · 26/04/2017 20:20

Kaelie's a nicer spelling.

xyzandabc · 26/04/2017 20:21

Eilidh yes,
Ceilidh no, it's a dance.

honeysucklejasmine · 26/04/2017 20:24

I went to school with one. I don't link it and the dance. Maybe because i knew her before i knew about the dancing.

lljkk · 26/04/2017 20:28

Kayleigh is fine. I am simple so would lean towards a spelling like Kaylee.

kingfisherblue33 · 26/04/2017 20:29

Kaylee??? No. Made up. She'd be forever having to spell her name.

Lol at ceilidh Grin

Kayleigh is nice.

paperdreams16 · 26/04/2017 20:51

I was coming on to say I know a Ceilidh (spelt that way) and I really like it! Blush

Seems I am very much in the minority but it really suits her. Very strange as I don't like it when spelt Kayleigh even though I appreciate they sound the same!
