We both like the name Dylan and DH would like Thomas as a middle name in tribute to his best friend who died when they were teenagers. So he'd be Dylan Thomas SURNAME
Are people going to think this is stupid?!? Will people make jokes?

Seems fine to me.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 24/04/2017 13:13

Why would anybody think this is stupid? I love the name Thomas, btw.

DixieFlatline · 24/04/2017 13:14

My initial reaction was that it was silly, sorry OP.

NannyR · 24/04/2017 13:17

Sounds fine, you're using Thomas because it has a special meaning for you, not in homage to the poet and you won't use the middle name that much anyway.

TJDetweiler · 24/04/2017 13:17

I must be missing something? Seems like a lovely name to me.

robinia · 24/04/2017 13:19

Would seem to me like either a homage or you didn't know who Dylan Thomas was.

2014newme · 24/04/2017 13:21

If you are bug DT fans, go fot it. There must be loads of kids with variations on that in Wales.

YouBoggleMyMind · 24/04/2017 13:22

I guess we don't want people thinking it's about Dylan Thomas the poet. It's a very personal special reason why we want Thomas as the middle name. The other name we like is Finley. So Finley Thomas SURNAME.

OP posts:
Bringmesunshite · 24/04/2017 13:23

Judging by some posts already, I don't think everyone will see it anyway.
I'd choose it if I were a big DT fan.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 24/04/2017 13:23

Don't worry about it. I know a Henry James. He's called Henry.

Bringmesunshite · 24/04/2017 13:24

Prefer Finlay for what my opinion is worth. Dylan with the special name Thomas looks a bit gimmicky and detracts from a name that is special to you.

SallyAlbrightsCollegeRoomate · 24/04/2017 13:25

I would assume that you loved the works of the poet but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. It's a nice name.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 24/04/2017 13:26

I do prefer Finley Thomas.

elisa2502 · 24/04/2017 13:29

I know alot of Labrador dogs called Dylan Thomas in Wales!!

YouBloodyWhat · 24/04/2017 13:34

Most people won't know his middle name, remember. And of those that do, half won't know who Dylan Thomas was. And then for the TINY few who hear the two names together, know who Dylan Thomas was, AND actually bother to ask if he's named after the poet, you can just say "Nope, just a coincidence".

Wouldn't put me off tbh.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 24/04/2017 13:37

Yeah I would notice but not say anything...could you have 2 middle names to break it up?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 24/04/2017 13:40

I would say that you should avoid John Thomas.

Dropzone1 · 24/04/2017 13:40

How often will you use the middle name realistically? Also assuming you will be using the Welsh pronunciation of Dylan?

I'd go for it if it's your favourite name.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 24/04/2017 13:42

elisa

I'm kind of entertained you know the middle names of several labradors. i don't even know thew middle names of colleagues etc.

YouBoggleMyMind · 24/04/2017 13:42

Just to be clear, we're not Welsh. We just love the names Finley and Dylan. Not too keen on 2 middle names to be honest. Thank you all for your opinions you wise Mumsnetters Smile

OP posts:
Dropzone1 · 24/04/2017 13:47

If you're using the English pronounciation I would also use the English spelling.

I think if you plan on using the middle name regularly I'd go for Finley...or be prepared for regular comments about the poet Smile

YouBloodyWhat · 24/04/2017 14:07

Every Dylan I've ever known has spelt it Dylan and pronounced it the "English" way.

NannyR · 24/04/2017 14:13

I know a couple of Dillons and Dhillons who are Indian, but I thought the usual way to spell it in the UK was Dylan?

Dropzone1 · 24/04/2017 14:28

nanny the Welsh spelling Dylan is pronounced Dullan as opposed to Dillon.

ColourfulOrangex · 24/04/2017 14:38

Dylan Thomas goes much better than Finley Thomas and I didn't know who the poet was so I don't think everyone will make the connection
