Dylan Thomas

We both like the name Dylan and DH would like Thomas as a middle name in tribute to his best friend who died when they were teenagers. So he'd be Dylan Thomas SURNAME
Are people going to think this is stupid?!? Will people make jokes?

Sorry, but I immediately thought of the poet and I don't even know all that much about poetry!

That said, if those are the names you love, then it isn't the end of the world. Most people he knows won't actually say the middle name aloud ever.

I slightly prefer Finley as a first name though, as it has better nickname potential and just because I like it better, but if you don't, then Dylan Thomas Surname is fine I think.

I love Thomas Finley best of all though if that's on the table...

I immediately thought of the poet, but then I am from Swansea. Probably not that many people actually know who he is so it's unlikely to be an issue.

Also agree with PPs that every Dylan I've known has been spelt like that and pronounced the English way, even in Wales, so I'd stick with that spelling.

Loyly · 24/04/2017 15:07

I thought of the poet too. I don't think it's a good idea.

Beelzebop · 24/04/2017 15:07

I think both sound lovely, and no negative association (poetry rocks!).

SuperSix77 · 24/04/2017 15:11

I have a friend who called her son Wilfred Owen (for similar reasons to you & not in homage to the poet) so I'd go for it. But personally I prefer Finley to Dylan.

kittytom · 24/04/2017 15:12

I think it is fine and if people thought it was because of the poet that isn't an awful thing anyway.

If you want to avoid any comments just don't announce his middle name. My son's middle name is Daniel but I forgot to mention it when he was born. Even to the person he was named after. Nobody has ever asked!

If I had another boy I would consider Henry James - and I have never read anything by him. Just like the names.

My son's full name is (accidentally) that of a famous-ish philosopher and only a few people have ever commented.

NanooCov · 24/04/2017 15:22

Thomas Dylan? Much nicer.

TheElephantofSurprise · 24/04/2017 15:24

Seems fine. I knew a 'John Thomas'. That was a bit less fine.

CaraCranky · 24/04/2017 15:34

I thought this was a thread about the poet when I saw the title. I would assume it was either a tribute to the the poet or you hadn't heard of him so didn't realise. Not that it really matters some will get the reference others won't.

EssentialHummus · 24/04/2017 15:39

I think it's fine (I immediately thought of the poet). He'd be known as Dylan Surname for 90% of things.

Sophronia · 24/04/2017 16:47

I immediately thought of the poet. I think it's ok though, he won't be introducing himself as "Dylan Thomas" to everyone. I'd prefer Thomas Dylan though.

GirlcalledJames · 24/04/2017 20:21

I love the poet, but I wouldn't as he's associated with drinking himself to death. If you had heard of him, I would suspect that your son will grow up around people who do, too.

Adarajames · 24/04/2017 23:55

Id assume you were Welsh and possibly poetry fans, but wouldn't find it odd at all
