Anthony

Magnus

Phileas (my favourite)

Blaise (I love it... But I'm a bit hesitant because of the meaning. What if a classmate finds out about it when they're a teen? what if our LO does have a lisp?)

Hector

Jonathan

I personally think we're having a boy this time around (I don't want to know in advance)... And we unfortunately still don't have a boy's name. The only one DH vetoed was Severin, btw...

Hector and Magnus are lovely. I'm not at all keen on Blaise. Others are ok, but not my favourites.

GinIsIn · 23/04/2017 10:53

I really hate Blaise. There's a big block of flats behind my house and there's a woman there who is constantly screaming at her DD from the balcony - "Courtney-Blaise, get the fuck in here!!!" "Courtney-Blaise, your tea's ready!" So it's really put me off it.

GinIsIn · 23/04/2017 10:54

Hector is a fantastic name and so is Magnus. If you like those you might also like Rufus and Horace?

nancy75 · 23/04/2017 11:03

I've realised why I thought Blaise was an old lady name, Blaise was one of the Golden Girls (showing my age)

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 11:10

Fenella

"Courtney-Blaise, get the fuck in here!!!" "Courtney-Blaise, your tea's ready!" So it's really put me off it.

Oh gosh. That's how I feel about the name Aurel. "Aurel, come here. No Aurel, we don't draw on our walls. Auureeel!!"

Horace is much too close to DH's name. Plus, the name Horace reminds me of an obese, middle aged man for some weird reason.

But thanks :)

(Rufus is nice but I personally don't love it)

Rockaby

Yes, mumsnetters seem to really like Magnus. I wonder if this means it will become crazy popular (top 20/10) popular?

Rockaby · 23/04/2017 11:14

@feedtheshark

Yes, you're probably right!

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 11:32

Rockaby
Yes :( I don't mind a somewhat popular name. But when a formerly uncommon name suddenly get massively popular it tends to date imo.

I mean, if we were to name the LO Anthony and there was an other Anthony in his class I wouldn't mind at all. but I don't want a name that kind of "belongs" to a certain decade... :(

Rockaby · 23/04/2017 11:44

Ah I don't know feed. These things are so hard to predict. Have you been onto that dark greener site to see if it's on an upward trend? That's sometimes useful. I'll have a look for you now.

Hmmm it is getting more popular but still only 103 born in 2015.

GinIsIn · 23/04/2017 11:50

My parents gave me and my brother 'unusual' names..... within a year of us both being born they shot into the top 10 and have stayed there for the past 3 decades! You can't always tell.

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 11:53

Rockaby

Yeah, rank 406 isn't popular (imo. I'm sure some people think it's too popular.) But it is a pretty steep increase.

On the other hand, not going with Magnus because of this would be silly, right.

Gosh, I have no idea how to make that choice. I personally genuinely love the names Anthony, Magnus and Blaise.

Fenella

I don't think I'd mind that outcome.

I'd be rather... "miffed" (?) if the names were very popular in the next 10 year and then become unpopular again.

Like: "Magnus? Oh, I went to school with 5 boys names Magnus. It's really outdated now, isn't it?"

Love Magnus
Like Hector and phileas - but prefer Phineas / Phin / Fin

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 23/04/2017 12:16

I love Magnus from your list, it's one of the names I considered for DS.
Jonathan is also good but it's DH's name so I'm biased Smile Just be warned though, lots of people can't spell Jonathan and he has it spelt wrongly on a lot of legal documents and personalised items that then need sending back and correcting Angry

Rockaby · 23/04/2017 12:36

Go with what you love imo! It's impossible to predict how popular any name will become. Magnus is so lovely.

Rockaby · 23/04/2017 12:37

Also, it's fairly classic, not a new name, so I don't think it will date badly.

I don't like Cassius (depending on the pronunciation it sounds like Cash...) and Rex is a very doggy name imo. Sorry. But thank you.

Rockaby Yes... I unfortunately also love Anthony and Blaise. It's difficult...

rosie Oh... THat's somewhat surprising. I thought Jonathan wouldn't have spelling issues. But what I dislike is actually the nn Jonty. Idk. DH has a friend called Jonty. It's nice, I suppose. But it sounds a bit "eh" imo.

Johnathan with nn johnny

befuddledgardener · 23/04/2017 13:23

Sebastian

DebiNewberry · 23/04/2017 13:25

Hector. I like phileas as well but I think you'd get nn Phil

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 13:30

Navy

I don't know. In my mind Rex is a "dog's name". I mean, it's the stereotypical guard dog name imo. I'm sorry if it offended you. But when I hear the name Rex I personally automatically think of a German Shepherd or giant poodles.

I have a soft spot for Hector Grin.

Anthony is perfectly fine.

Really dislike Magnus and Phileas (poncy).

Blaise is dreadful. So try hard.

Jonathan is meh.

CPtart · 23/04/2017 17:26

Anthony. Solid, classic, if not a little dull.
Blaise and Phileas sound like cartoon characters and Hector is too hippyish IMO. Magnus is dreadful. Jonathan is a bit wet and rather effeminate. Not much help, sorry.
