Hi all,

What do you think of the name Mars/Marz? I know it isn't very common so I'm not sure what others think of it. How do you think it should be spelt?

Thanks

nooooo!

OlennasWimple · 25/03/2017 16:58

Marouf is a really nice name! I'm guessing he wants to Anglicize it , though?

Mars isn't a great nickname to use in a professional context, though. How about something like Marc, Rufus, or even his initials (i knew someone who was only ever known as MJ, for example)

ZombieApocalips · 25/03/2017 17:26

Has he considered a shortened version of his surname or going by a middle name?

Maz is a flexible nickname?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/03/2017 17:34

❤️ Lars, but not Mars/z.

5moreminutes · 25/03/2017 17:36

Hmm - dd1's peers would call him Mar-o I suspect. Mario? Still from a different culture but very well known.

I'd go for the most natural shortening based on how it sounds. Ask a teenaged boy maybe - they are incapable of using full names, and teen nicknames do stick especially for men if they aren't too silly.

The pronounciation of his actual name should trigger a natural shortening ideally.

If he just wanted a "British" name I guess Mark/ Marc is the obvious one, but a nickname would be better than an entirely different name no matter how similar imo.

fairylightseverywhere · 25/03/2017 17:37

I really like Rufus as a different version of his real name.

5moreminutes · 25/03/2017 17:38

Oh yes - just Rouf is good and could be short for Rufus or for Marouf.

maya7161 · 25/03/2017 17:50

Oooh Rufus is a good one - hadn't thought of that!

Maz sounds a lot like wazz haha – I think I'd avoid that one! Not so sure about Marr..

I was thinking the same about Mars - it does sound a little kiddish/unprofessional. He is trying to just go for a bit of an anglicised name.

Mars was the Roman god of war. You'd be better off with the Greek version, which is Ares.

twobarnsmammisonthebus · 25/03/2017 18:04

Rou is a great nn for Marouf. But Marouf is a fantastic name in itself!

crapfatbanana · 25/03/2017 18:46

I also like Marouf and I don't think it's a name that will be difficult to cross cultures, but if he really wants to shorten it I'd use Roo.

My friend Qasim from Pakistan goes by Sunny in the UK so nothing like his actual name.

Pencilvester · 26/03/2017 00:06

I quite like Mars but not Marz.

Deadsouls · 26/03/2017 00:12

Mars - no! Mars - double no.

Joeybee · 26/03/2017 03:25

I like it as a name. It'd be a brave choice though as there is obviously the planet and the chocolate bar association! It sounds like a Scandinavian name to me, but apparently it is Latin. I could imagine a European child with the name Mars though.
I don't like Marz - just don't like the way it looks.

PenelopeFlintstone · 26/03/2017 04:36

I like Marouf.

BaliBound · 26/03/2017 14:04

I love the name Mars!

SunshineOutdoors · 27/03/2017 19:42

I would want to pronounce Marz 'Marts' if I saw it. Not sure why

originalbiglymavis · 27/03/2017 20:05

When I see Marz I think of Maryz.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 27/03/2017 20:10

Whatever happened to Maryz?

heateallthebuns · 27/03/2017 23:26

Should be spelled neither way it's awful.

heateallthebuns · 27/03/2017 23:28

Ah, it's nice for a nickname! I'd go with s.

olderthanyouthink · 27/03/2017 23:35

As a nickname not so bad

If Rou as a natural nick name or mark as a anglicised name

BasicBetty · 28/03/2017 10:00

Hmm, don't like either sorry
