Baby son is a week old. We have two older sons with unusual but easily pronounced names. We would like our third boy to have a similar type of name.
DH favourite was Percy and mine was Rafe. We have vetoed these two as we each dislike each other's first choice.

This is our compromise list:
Asa - was joint favourite but now I'm having cold feet - DH is still keen. Is it too uncommon? Will baby spend life correcting its pronounciation? (Ace-uh).
Jago (Jay-go but dislike nn Jay)
Quentin (nn Quinn)
Sebastian - but bit too similar to our surname.

I have unusual name, which I like but dislike the fact that I have to continually spell it out to others. So want to save my son from difficult pronounciations/spellings.

Which name would you choose?
Or please suggest other names of same style.
Thank you.

I like jago (not sure it it's one which will be forever misheard as jake?) I like Quentin but always thought Quinn was more feminine.
Sebastian is nice but think it's also quite popular in some areas so if you want something more unusual maybe steer clear

TheUpsideDown · 23/03/2017 20:41

Maybe Beau? Or Senna?
Can't be mispronounced. Unusual but not totally 'out there' unusual....?

MegsMog · 23/03/2017 20:58

Love Asa.

I know of a recent baby boy named Beaumont (nn Beau) No idea why they didn't just stick with Beau as a name but each to their own I suppose.

As for your list, I love Asa & Jago. Sebastian is fairly popular here (south east) so maybe not that unusual. That said it's an adorable name.

Congrats on your latest addition!Flowers

Asa, although I'd worry about the 'Asa-hole' jokes too!

Really like Sebastian, but dislike the others I'm afraid!

I liked someone's suggestion of Asher, or Bruno.

What about...
Brent
Odin
Austin
Reid
Grayson or Gray
Corbyn
Bennett
Heath
Silas

My favourites are Asa and Jago, love both. However, when I mentioned Asa to DH once he vetoed on the grounds that there's a (female) porn star called that Blush

Rafe would have been lovely.

Sebastian is nice but seems v popular at the moment. I really dislike Quentin.

My vote it definitely for Asa. I love it and it has been on my list for years. Would be my second choice for a son after Ivo. It's strong and there are some famous people with the name like Asa Gray the American Botanist who worked with Charles Darwin and the young actor Asa Butterfield. If people pronounce it the wrong way they will only need correcting once. My second choice is Sebastian. Good luck choosing.

BabyInWaiting · 24/03/2017 13:55

Thank you everyone for your comments. Really like the suggestions of Bruno, Otto/Otis and Vincent.
I am reconsidering Asa as there were lots of positive views on it. I agree that people can mispronounce many more common names and Asa is so short it's pretty easy to spell. Just hope the Asa-hole nn doesn't come to many people's minds Blush
Thanks again

What about Reme? I also love Quinn (but not Quentin - this is a dreadful old man name) and Corin.

bluefeathers · 24/03/2017 14:05

I love Quinn. I hate Asa however it's spelt. Sounds like an acronym

Misspilly88 · 24/03/2017 14:07

Jago is very popular where I am. They're everywhere.

MollyHuaCha · 24/03/2017 14:13

When I see Asa written it looks like it stands for Advertising Standards Authority or Amateur Swimming Association. It's also used to refer to acetylsalicylic acid in medicine. So for me, Asa is a no (sorry).

I love Sebastian (Seb) from your list. Quentin is great too.

leghoul · 24/03/2017 14:15

Inigo (my favourite)
Laszlo
Otto (just nicked these from above but I like them)
Milo/ Miles/Myles
Diego
Sorrell (a friend named her child this as he looked like a bit like a squirrel)
unhelpful

Redpramlady · 24/03/2017 16:21

Heard a little boy called Ira the other day!

Marcipex · 24/03/2017 16:32

Eek, not Senna, it's a laxative.

And on a similar note, I know an Asa who gets those a** jokes.

Spelling it Acer is safer I should think.

Bruno is lovely. How about Troy or Flint? I know boys called those, both very popular children.

Dogsmom · 25/03/2017 21:57

I know a 2 year old Asa and every time I see it written on fb I think of the Advertising Standards Authority, his Mom calls him Asa Spades and Asa Base (Ace of Base was a 90's pop group), the poor child doesn't stand much chance of not being teased about his name if his parents are already doing it Confused

Bubblysqueak · 25/03/2017 22:01

I like Sebastian but really like Sebi as a shortened version.

LadyCallandraDaviot · 25/03/2017 22:03

Think someone has already suggested it but Asher (nn Ash) is lovely and was on our shortlist for DS3.
