Flame is probably my ultimate guilty pleasure name.

Tastesjustlikecherrycola85 · 24/03/2017 18:53

Delilah and Faroukh

1horatio · 24/03/2017 18:56

It's so interesting to see how some names keep cropping up. Like Malachi, for example!

sugarpie I also like Ziva. But it apparently sounds very similar to the Hebrew word for gonorrhea... Which, seeing as it's a Hebrew name...

Well, as long as you don't judge me for liking Vercingetorix, Corvus, Alon, Castor, Maxima, Emeraude, Olympe/Olympia and Misha...? Wink

I need to get myself an army of cats to name the above.

MommaGee · 24/03/2017 19:01

Persephone. Would be my name I love but could never use.

Lillith I adore but DH vetoed.

Love Gabriela and Gideon for boys

I need to get myself an army of cats to name the above.

Good strategy.

When I was little I used to wish that I worked in an office that could give children names (like, I was a little kid...). I'm not sure how exactly I came up with it/why I thought the parents would agree with this weird concept. Maybe it was influenced of stories of children being abandoned? Not sure....

But yeah. I wanted to work in that office, the naming office... (I must have been a really weird child). I had a name book and my parents had to read it to me before I could give my dolls/plushies names.
Favourite names were Leona, Anna, Madita and Virginia, I think ;) Oh, and Vera. I myself wanted to be called Vera...

Your idea of getting a cat army is more feasible...

Tbh horatio it would be better than letting some people name their own. The girl in Australia called Nutella. The thing for taking out random letters like N'talia or random capitalization LaDonDa or such

Pencilvester · 26/03/2017 10:23

What is a guilty pleasure name? Why would you feel guilty for liking a name? Or is this ome of those 'what I would name my child if I were brave enough' threads?

CancellyMcChequeface · 26/03/2017 11:24

My current favourites are Benjamin and Matilda.

Names I love but likely could never actually use: Persephone, Cassiopeia, Amaranth, Lucrezia, Miriel, Yasmin, Sophronia, Zachariah, Tarquin, Quentin, Aloysius, Mallory. And maybe Balonz.

bellamcpoopants · 26/03/2017 14:43

I love:

Persephone
Cora (there's a theme!)
Ptolemy
Raphael
Leonardo (another theme!)
Cassiopeia

I'm sure there are more that I'd never use but adore!

OneSecondAfter · 26/03/2017 14:51

I like Castor a lot! But then, I don't live in the UK, so the oil thing isn't an issue.

Not sure what it means. To me personally it's a name that I love but can't use. It has nothing to do with my own bravery, I'm not the one that may be given the name of a (in the English language) stomach losening oil... Or, I know, for example a little girl called Aphrodisia. Lovely name imo, but definitely too close to aphrodisiac. So, even if this was my personal all-time favourite name I wouldn't want to "do that" to a child of mine...

I'm not sure if this makes sense ;)

Cancelly I love Sophronia. That's really lovely!

I love the sound and feel of Candida and Gavin but wouldn't use either.

I really really love Loinnir and Seren - my favourite girls' names I think - but don't have any Irish or Welsh heritage that I know about and don't personally like using names I don't feel entitled to IYSWIM.

Love Moses, Chaim and Shoshanna but though we do as a family have some Jewish heritage they feel a bit strong for the limited amount we have. God I'm very close to racism on this aren't I? Would never say that anybody else shouldn't use them though.

Cagliostro · 26/03/2017 15:53

Lysander for a boy, Artemis for a girl!

Pencilvester · 26/03/2017 16:10

Oh, I get it! Thanks for explaining. Yes, I have always loved the name Lenore but would never use it because it sounds like fabric softener Grin

bellamcpoopants · 26/03/2017 20:29

Ooh I love Lysander too

qumquat · 26/03/2017 21:01

Too many names to list that I love.

Guilty pleasure is Wolfgang. If only I could.

snotato · 26/03/2017 21:38

Guilty pleasure-cadwallader!
Didn't even know it was a name until I saw it in a baby name book.but it sticks out and I've remembered it since reading the book maybe 7 years ago.

1horatio · 26/03/2017 21:40

Mrs I know what you mean.... ;)

I personally really adore Leif but wouldn't use it either.
God I'm very close to racism on this aren't I? I don't think so. I personally would feel weird calling DC a name of a culture I have absolutely no connection to (ok, you actually do with Shoshanna, for example, but still). I'd feel weird using a Japanese name for example seeing as I have no connection to the country/culture (well, I do like Japanese food, but still).

I'm currently contemplating the names Arik and Virginia. Virginia is actually one of my all-time favourites (ever since I was a little girl) but I wonder if the virgin-part is a but too... "virgny-y"... ;)
