Boy:

Elmo (can we? I love Elmo Gabriel ... ....-....) Do children know who Elmo is nowadays? Do you know who Elmo is (I didn't and neither did DH)?
Gabriel (too popular?)
Anton (nice, but isn't it a bit boring...?)
Elric
Clinton (I love the name. But I think it will have to remain a guilty pleasure, right?)

Girl:

Erica (my favourite)
Susannah
Helena (my 2nd favourite girl's name)
Louisa

I love Emmett! Absolutely gorgeous. Are we allowed to know what your dd is called?

Just to add to those saying elmo is too well known, there is a show on cbeebies every day called the Furchester Hotel, in which elmo is a main character, so most preschoolers and their parents will have that association.

If you want something unusual but a proper name, what about Franklin?

1horatio · 19/03/2017 10:11

dd is called?

Better not. I revealed it in a previous thread... And then realised how identifiable mumsent technically makes me (not that I think andybody really cares. but you know... There are weird people) and therefore namechanged...

But her name starts with a C, is barely outside the top 1'000 but still very well known. I mean, I've never met somebody that has never heard of the name or anything like that.

Yes, Elmo is probably out :( Well, except as a middle name.

But Emmett Elmo .... ...-... would be a bit weird, I guess.

I'd vote Gabriel Emilio

Sunshineandlaughter · 19/03/2017 10:24

Or emmett gabriel

1horatio · 19/03/2017 10:24

I'm going through the names people suggested. (thank you so much, btw!) I like the sound of Emil, but the meaning is a bit dodgy, right?

Asa is really really lovely. I just fear it would sound like a girl's name, especially in German.

I don't like the names Elmer or Grover.

OP posts:
Sunshineandlaughter · 19/03/2017 10:25

Why is Emil dodgy?

1horatio · 19/03/2017 10:29

Well, it's really connected to the quite "naughty" but very smart and entertaining Emil i Lönneberga to me. ;)
It also means rival. Which... Idk. It's not that I dislike the name. But I just don't have this "YES!" feeling (not sure if it makes sense). I did put it on the list. Maybe the feeling will still come...

I have to google Jim Henson...

Am I the only one who was shocked at this.

I think this thread provides the counter argument against depriving children of TV.

StVincent · 19/03/2017 11:21

Emmett is a not very often used but very well known Cornish word for tourist. It means "ant" and you do sometimes hear people talk about "bloody emmets" Grin especially in August. However I did work with an Emmett in Cornwall in August and he survived!

smartiecake · 19/03/2017 11:25

I agree AllPizzas I loved loved the muppets growing up and watched them on tv. I think it's quite sad that the OP doesn't not know who Jim Henson was

1horatio · 19/03/2017 11:36

depriving children of TV.

I wasn't deprived. When I was old enough to go to school I was allowed to watch certain films or educational programmes. Oh, and later I Iiked the first few Harry Potters and my favourite film was lord of the rings when I was a teen. I don't feel like I missed out at all :)

But I like to watch it nowadays.
I like the whole avengers franchise, watched the first few seasons of supernatural and currently love watching Hannibal.
I also like les choristes, Mord ist mein Geschäft, Liebling, Kleinohrhasen, quesqu'on a fait au bon dieu, I liked Troy (because of Brad Pitt) and some other movies. Plus, there's sport! It's sometimes very entertaining. I mean, I like watching it sometimes nowadays. (which was the point of this looong paragraph. Which is silly when one sentence would have been enough...)

But it's crazy how much time watching tv takes.

Sometimes I wish I wouldn't like it ;)...

DH has it easier on that front. He never really went into it.

My brother (in his 30s) is called Elm... I guess like the tree but I remember my mum saying it was also something Australian aboriginal ...

BeyondUnderthinking · 19/03/2017 11:39

I like Elmo. I have a green trash monster though, so may not be the best judge Grin

1horatio · 19/03/2017 11:47

It means "ant" and you do sometimes hear people talk about "bloody emmets

Hm... But I don't think it would be an issue for the other parts of the UK, would it?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/03/2017 11:49

There's an Emmett in Teeilight as well isn't there? That doesn't seem as popular as it was though, and the name is known from other things too, so people might not make the connection.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/03/2017 11:49

*Twilight

Pencilvester · 19/03/2017 12:01

Emlyn?

1horatio · 19/03/2017 12:05

It though Emlyn was a girl's name.
It also reminds me of gremlin Confused
But thank you for suggesting this :)

Twilight

I've atched that first movie. True, I think he's the buff guy?

(googled it, yes he is. He doesn't seem to be an important or evil character)

I know an elmore ( named after elmore james -a famous blues singer ) lovely little chap he is too Smile

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/03/2017 14:12

I think Emlyn is a welsh boys' name? I know it from the Snow Spider books.

Milo? Nearly the same letters...

1horatio · 19/03/2017 14:34

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams

I love the name Milo. But I have sooo many cousins called Milo/Mila/Miro/Mira etc...

Elmore sounds lovely in English, but not in German, unfortunately. But thank you for the suggestions :)

Emlyn is a Welsh male name.

I didn't know this was also an Irish surname... I think it's derived from Emma, right?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Emmet It is an Anglo-Irish surname but is used as a first name in Ireland because Emmet was a nationalist rebel. He gave a very famous speech from the dock after he was condemned to be hanged, drawn and quartered for instigating a rebellion against British rule, in 1803.
Often spelled with two Ts, but the version with one T is also used.

Suggestions:
Alban
Urban
Bede
Blaise
Conrad
Ultan

1horatio · 19/03/2017 18:24

t may be connected to the given name Emma, or the place of Emmott, Lancashire (now known as Laneshawbridge, but still containing Emmott Hall).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmett_(name)

Alban: I dislike this. Not sure why
Urban: I didn't know this is a name
Bede: I didn't know this is a name either
Blaise: Lovely name. I wonder if there's a good quality to lisping...?
Conrad: I really dislike this
Ultan: This sounds pretty nice. I have to google this name, thank you :)

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 19/03/2017 18:35

Ultan is an Irish name, as far as I know.

Blaise is pronounced 'blaze'. No lisping required.
