Boy:

Elmo (can we? I love Elmo Gabriel ... ....-....) Do children know who Elmo is nowadays? Do you know who Elmo is (I didn't and neither did DH)?
Gabriel (too popular?)
Anton (nice, but isn't it a bit boring...?)
Elric
Clinton (I love the name. But I think it will have to remain a guilty pleasure, right?)

Girl:

Erica (my favourite)
Susannah
Helena (my 2nd favourite girl's name)
Louisa

In my dds nursery class there is a boy named Omar, dd calls him Elmer as she can't say his name, I always picture a small multi coloured elephant charging round the class Grin

Emmett to me will always be the time travelling Dr Emmett Brown from Back to the Future.

OhTinky · 19/03/2017 07:37

See I don't mind Elmo as a name - St Elmo's Fire! I was never the biggest fan of Sesame Street.

Elwood? Is that even a name?!
Ellis
Elliott
Otto

Weebleswobbles · 19/03/2017 07:40

Cookie Monster - I luffs him

ME EAT COOKIES!!

PiesDescalzos · 19/03/2017 07:41

I actually really like the name Emmet. I have a 2 year old dd so not yet been introduced to the Lego world, maybe that would change things?

I think eventually every single name will have an association with something, and children's Tv and literature is quite expansive now so many will be featured here. I do think Elmo is a no go however! Most people wouldn't be able to keep a straight face. Plus babies do grow, so what's cute as a toddler ends up as an 18 year old horny adult with a breaking voice named Elmo.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/03/2017 07:41

Love Elric, Helena, then Louisa.
Not keen on the others.

PiesDescalzos · 19/03/2017 07:42

P.S I never watched nor liked Sesame Street

Hassled · 19/03/2017 07:43

Trump's proposed budget would put an end to PBS television, and PBS makes Sesame Street. It's sadly possible the generation of children born this year won't ever know who Elmo is so you may not have a problem.

PiesDescalzos · 19/03/2017 07:46

Isn't Elmo on a show on Netflix right now? I had to endure this at my cousin's a month ago as their ds loved him.

PiesDescalzos · 19/03/2017 07:47

*loves

I just googled - it's called The Furchester Hotel.

Emmett will forever be the star of The Lego Movie to children of current primary school age (and their parents).

That does sound like a rather nice association, doesn't it?

Emmett is basically an Irish surname name inspired by the patriot Robert Emmett. And also the Lego Movie character. I don't think 50s America at all when I see it.

I didn't know this was also an Irish surname... I think it's dervied from Emma, right?

Anton is another Irish name - translates to Anthony. It's also Anthony in a few other languages (German, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, Dutch, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Slovene, Macedonian, Croatian, Romanian, Estonian, Finnish)... I think it's my favourite of your boy list though I like Gabriel too. I don't think it's all that popular. It was about 10 to 15 years ago around here.

I didn't know Anton was an also an Irish name. It's on the list because it's the German (etc) version of Anthony... :)

Just googled Emmett for pop culture associations. He's apparently also the neighbour of Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping up appearances... Hm....

Somehow I think naming DC2 is harder than naming DD...

Emmett is a common Irish Christian name. I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid at it.

SoupDragon · 19/03/2017 09:14

I was hoping for Cookie Monster. :)

Awesome. At least not an other name scratched off the list because of a tv show or something... ;)
Nobody would think it's weird that DH is English and that I'm not Irish either?

Are there any particularly negative associations for the name Emmett in the UK? Or wherever the person reading this happens to live? :)

Cookie Monster.

That isn't a name. Of course not. Confused

I don't think Emmett has any negative connotations as such... as one poster said, I immediately think of the character from the Back to the Future films. He's a kindly eccentric scientist so not a negative connotation as such.

I do feel it's a little old fashioned (maybe because of the film?) but those names are coming back in fashion aren't they? I don't love it personally but it's a bit different whilst still being a 'proper' name.

ArseyTussle · 19/03/2017 09:24

I like Emmett. I also like Elliott.

In the Elmo style of things, what about Cosmo or Inigo?

FunnyBird · 19/03/2017 09:24

You could go for something that would be shortened to Elmo. I imagine it might be short for Guglielmo, Italian for William.

ArseyTussle · 19/03/2017 09:24

Asa?

Sunshineandlaughter · 19/03/2017 09:26

Emmett has no negative connotations!

NeonFlamingo · 19/03/2017 09:29

Similar to Arsey's suggestion- Cosimo (Cosima for a girl)?

1horatio · 19/03/2017 09:35

Oh, that does sound rather nice, doesn't it?

DD's name already starts with a C... If we find THE name and it's starts with a c then that's ok. But we're trying to avoid it... But Inigo is rather nice :) Maybe Eneko?

What about instead of Elmo, Emilio, as in Emilio Estevez. It's a bit like Elmo!
