Hello everyone,

Our favourite names are Kacper and Oskar. We have decided on the middle name Maksymilian :)

Which do you prefer: Kacper Maksymilian or Oskar Maksymilian?

Thank you x

Both lovely names. Be th very popular I know lots of boys called those names.

I prefer KAsper.

WyfOfBathe · 16/03/2017 19:03

Oskar. It "works" in English in a way that Kacper doesn't.

I know two Oskars but no Kacpers - and I live in a fairly large, multicultural town.

Badhairday1001 · 16/03/2017 19:23

Both are lovely.

Mumzypops - don't be stupid! Kacper and Oskar are hardly out there when it comes to kids names. I have taught children called both names and no one seemed to have a problem with mispronunciation.

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/03/2017 19:34

There's a Kacper in DD's class. The kids all pronounce it Casper/Kasper and I only realised how it was spelt when we got an xmas card.

They're in primary at the moment but I do think when he gets to high school, it may be a name that is ripe for having the piss taken out of it with regards to the 'cack' connotations (it's a nice name, btw, but kids can be merciless).

I think on the whole, I'd prefer Oskar anyway.

TheHiphopopotamus · 16/03/2017 19:36

There are a few Polish children at my children's school and no one would even think to tease them about their names, the children accept Bartosz and Szymon as readily as they do Brooklyn and Percy!

Neither of those names contain a slang word for poo in them though, do they?

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 16/03/2017 19:44

Sorry to hijack but I just wanted to ask AuntieOBEM -

My daughter is Kasia, she constantly has to correct folks pronunciation

Is it Kay-sha/Kay-she-a? The lady who did my wedding make-up was called Kasia and it was such a pretty looking name, I'm sure she introduced herself as Kay-sha but I can't quite remember!

BestIsWest · 16/03/2017 19:46

DS has a lovely friend called Kacper. Great name. No one seems to have any problem with the name.

FastandLoose · 16/03/2017 19:56

In my opinion, if you love Kacper, go for it. If you can't decide between the two and are going to be living in the UK, go for Oskar as it works much better in English.

heateallthebuns · 16/03/2017 20:15

I prefer Oskar

I agree many British people would find cacper hard to spell and pronounce. I know I would and I live in a big cosmopolitan city with lots of polish people.

But I like Oskar better anyway! It's a lovely name!

MaisyPops · 16/03/2017 20:53

I read Cacper as cack-per. (No im not racist either according to earlier posts). I dont think kids will be cruel, just be prepared to explain pronunciation frequently to new people.

I think Oskar is lovely.

RuthB4 · 16/03/2017 21:15

Both are lovely names! I'm no help! Haha!

Ohyesiam · 16/03/2017 21:59

brindle you've heard the phrase cack handed? Well now you know what it means.

Chatelherault · 16/03/2017 22:28

Neither sound like dog names - how rude was that first reply?

Kacper is very nice, but I love two other Polish names, Jerzy (Jurek) and Marek, so want to add them to the mix.

buttercup54321 · 17/03/2017 00:15

A lifetime of spelling out his name over and over and over again. Poor child.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 17/03/2017 08:20

I think some of the comments on here are awful. You'd have to really be a bit dim to see Kacper and think it was prounounced "CAck-per".

Apachepony · 17/03/2017 10:19

Bloody hell, what is with the poor kid remarks. They are two lovely names that are v similar to the English equivalent (I hadn't heard kacper before but would have guessed at kasper or kashper). Do some of you live somewhere with zero outside influence?

SumAndSubstance · 17/03/2017 10:21

Kacper will be pronounced by 99% of Brits as "Kack - per".

Are 99% of Brits really that dim?

lljkk · 17/03/2017 10:29

I lot of people have low literacy in their native language, never mind making leaps to recognising letters have different sounds in another language. They aren't trying to be deliberately disrespectful.

I would anglicise the spelling of Kacper, make the c into an s, if I expected to live in an English language country long term. And switch back to c spelling if I moved back to Poland. Those would be my choices.

I don't like Oskar (any spelling). Kasper (Casper etc) is nice.

I like Oskar best. I would assume Kacper would be pronounced close to Casper but when seeing it written, the Kac part jumps out so I'd avoid it.

Emeraude · 21/03/2017 14:44

Kasia is cash-uh. It's really common as far as I can work out.

Mis-pronunciations will likely only happen once so I really wouldn't worry about it. Nor would I worry about any 'teasing'. Lots of children have completely made up names now, and lots have names that quite rightly represent the culture they come from. Kids really don't bat an eyelid. Choose the one you like best.

EmmaWoodlouse · 21/03/2017 16:17

The funny thing is I know two little boys called Kacper and Oskar who are... well, I suppose "frenemies". They're often together, anyway.

Kacper would be pronounced roughly like "cat spare" in Polish but the one I know is always just pronounced like Caspar at school, nobody seems to have any trouble with it. His brother also has a name that should technically be pronounced a different way but he uses the English near equivalent at school.

I think all in all I like the combination of Oskar Maksymilian better than Kacper Maksymilian, but not because of the "cack" issue because I've seen at first hand that that doesn't necessarily actually happen.
