Hello everyone,

Our favourite names are Kacper and Oskar. We have decided on the middle name Maksymilian :)

Which do you prefer: Kacper Maksymilian or Oskar Maksymilian?

Thank you x

My daughter is Kasia, she constantly has to correct folks pronunciation - it's annoying, but I love her name. Go for it op!

Newtssuitcase · 15/03/2017 11:25

I can assure you that cack is a real word (albeit slang) and that if you don't know that you really shouldn't go around accusing others of being illiterate.

You clearly also don't have any understanding of what constitutes racism.

Sorry OP. My comment was intended to be helpful to you.

IrregularCommentary · 15/03/2017 11:26

Kacper for me though that's partly because it makes me think of Kasper Schmeichel

temporarilyjerry · 15/03/2017 11:36

I know two boys called Kacper and have never known anyone to say "Kack-per".

maggiethemagpie · 15/03/2017 11:39

So, someone is racist because they point out (correctly so IMHO) that many british people will struggle to pronounce Kacper?

I consider myself intelligent but I must admit in my head I read it as 'Cac-per' and I would not automatically assume it is pronounced Casper.

I am not in any way racist.

Love both! Slightly prefer Kacper but really do love both almost equally.

HelloEngland · 15/03/2017 11:45

Thank you :) it seems like Oskar is preferred!

I live in the U.K. and know children with both of these names. Hmm Possibly if you live in one of the rural pockets where every child is called Emily or Oliver you may run into the issues suggested upthread. Where I am, I think most people are aware that obviously non-English names may be pronounced differently (in fact I think most people have a working understanding of some standard 'Polish' letters and could quickly grasp the likeness to Casper...)

Realistically, most people will not be introduced to your child for the first time in writing. The first Kacper I met, I only learned ages later how it was spelt.

I like both. I prefer Kacper. And I am also embarrassed by the crappy comments that always, always emerge on threads in this topic, if anyone dares to name their child something that is obviously either foreign or working class.

Oskar Oskar Oskar Grin

Lalalandfill · 15/03/2017 11:50

It's not racist to say people will find Kacper hard to pronounce and think of cack. Either spell it Kasper or go for Oskar

Newtssuitcase · 15/03/2017 11:51

Oskar is lovely. Kasper/Caspar/Kacper is also lovely (but my comment about spelling and British pronunciation stands Smile)

I am actually a discrimination and immigration lawyer. First time I've ever been accused of being racist! Hmm

ShoutOutToMyEx · 15/03/2017 11:54

Love Kacper Maksymilian. Both those names are on our boys' list.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 15/03/2017 11:56

I assumed Grindel was referring to the comment saying that they sound like the names of dogs.

Newtssuitcase · 15/03/2017 11:58

I don't think so shout if you read the follow on comments.

SpringyFlowery · 15/03/2017 12:00

I liked Rufus and my brother-in-law said it was iho a dog's name..

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 15/03/2017 12:02

Kacper will be pronounced by 99% of Brits as "Kack - per". Given that Cack means poo I would avoid that.

that's unfortunately true.

Oskar is lovely.

HelloEngland · 15/03/2017 12:05

@Lalalandfill - we wouldn't spell it Kasper (it is lovely!) but we definitely want a Polish name :)

Oskar Maksymilian Smile

OneSecondAfter · 15/03/2017 14:06

I prefer the sound of Kacper, but seeing it written down it just looks so wrong to my English eyes. I can't stop reading "Kack-per". So I personally would go with Oskar (which is a great name in its own right anyway).

Mumzypopz · 15/03/2017 20:28

Neither. Isn't kacper a bit rude, as in kac? Is that a spelling mistake. And Oskar, !!! Poor kid will spend rest of his life correcting people about the spelling of his name.

Mumzypopz · 15/03/2017 20:29

Even if it's pronounced Caspar, he is so going to get picked on at school.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 15/03/2017 21:19

Polish child is burdened with Polish name shocker. Hmm "Poor kid", indeed.

I usually have to spell my name out to people (unusual / non British name, not 'creative' spelling). It really is fine. I also make an effort to quickly learn how to pronounce and spell other people's names, because that's good manners. I really don't think that's so unusual.

I don't think most school children still use (or even know) the word cack anyway, do they? Not round here they don't, anyway. It's not like the first syllable is shit or something.

Hermanfromguesswho · 15/03/2017 21:28

Both are lovely but I prefer Oskar I think.
Why on earth would he get teased at school? Kids these days are used to lots of different names and different cultures.
There are a few Polish children at my children's school and no one would even think to tease them about their names, the children accept Bartosz and Szymon as readily as they do Brooklyn and Percy!

MyBreadIsEggy · 16/03/2017 08:00

Mumzypops are you actually on glue?
Polish child with a polish name....Shocker!!!
Before I got married, I spent my entire life spelling out my Polish surname to people. Should my parents have anglicised my surname (impossible by the way) in order to make it easier for English people? Hmm

Oskar Maksymilian - lovely name!
