Elegant girls name with a short nickname?

RavenclawWriter · 12/03/2017 14:58

I hope this is ok to ask here. This is for a novel I'm writing. I'm looking for a name for my character.

She is a lesbian who is artistic and quite punky. She comes from an upper middle class white background (goes to boarding school) and will have been given an elegant girly name, possibly something from a literary or artistic influence. But it needs to have a short, possibly unisex nickname that she will use with her friends. Born in about 2002 and is British.

Any suggestions?

I know a girl just like you're describing, her name is Angharad and she goes by Harry

NuffSaidSam · 12/03/2017 16:40

There is a character in 'The Jane Austen Bookclub' who is very similar to your character (arty, punky, lesbian) and is called Allegra so I'd maybe avoid that.

Perdita. Not sure about NN, maybe Red?

RavenclawWriter · 12/03/2017 17:09

I think I'm going to go with Allegra (she's not that similar to the character in The Jane Austen Bookclub).

Not sure how I should spell her nickname though.

Options are:

Al/Ali

Alle/Allie

Obviously the second one is more consistent with the spelling of the full name and more feminine but I don't want it to look 'made up' or like I've added extra letters.

I'd go for Al or Allie - I think Alle may not come off the page quite so clearly and both are true to the spelling of the name.

PageNowFoundFileUnderSpartacus · 12/03/2017 17:12

I'd go with Ali.

pieceofpurplesky · 12/03/2017 17:13

Jemima Jem

annandale · 12/03/2017 17:16

Relieved you're not going for Jasmine as I don't think it's right.

Als is another possibility but again a bit hard to read. Ali is quite unisex.

NapQueen · 12/03/2017 17:20

Could she just go by her surname?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/03/2017 17:40

Alexis (Lex).

Thank you everyone for the help!

I might come back if I need help naming other characters as there's quite a cast!
