Thoughts on the name Seren?

Hi all - I am new to Mumsnet!

I am Welsh, my partner is English and we live in England so would like a Welsh girls name that is easy to pronounce for English speakers.

I was just wondering peoples opinion on the name Seren? Seren seems to be the most consistent name for us throughout the pregnancy however I have seen on recent articles that Seren is in the top 10 "trendy" names predicted for 2017 (which puts me off).

I know Seren is popular in Wales but is it becoming more popular in England too? I am concerned that it will become tacky.

It is becoming more popular I think, but it's still very underused in England. I've only ever met one, and this was about 10 years ago.

I think it's a nice name and even if it does get a bit more popular I don't think it will be "tacky". All those articles about trending names cause a lot of confusion - it doesn't mean it's going to shoot into the top 10 or anything, just that it's starting to catch more parents' attention. Lots of websites also use number of searches/hits as a measure of popularity, rather than number of people actually using the name.

I know of one in England who is 2 (half Welsh), but she's the only one I've come across. It's a really pretty name.

I really like it. Simple, strong, no pronunciation issues.

I like it . I have heard of only one Seren (5yrs old), she lives in England with an english mother and welsh father.

I think it is a lovely name.

I only know one (in s Wales) but it seems to be mentioned EVERY TIME a Welsh person asks for suggestions.

It's a lovely name, I live in Wales so know quite a few but not as many as Isabel/Ellie type named

I thought you'd typed semen but apart from that I think it's rather nice. Never heard of it (& nor has my DS who lives in S Wales)

As my family live in Wales they are surrounded by more Seren's so have turned their nose up to it a little bit.

We also like Mali, Aneira and Efa, but Seren seems to be on top.

I am finding it so hard to make a final decision!

I love it. It was my choice for DC2 if a girl but I'm having a boy!

I think it sounds very harsh. I think most Welsh names sound hard to be honest.

Seren is lovely, IMO. Easy to spell and pronounce - although the English will not pronounce it as prettily as the Welsh do!

I know two Seren's !!! One is a 3 year old and the other is Seren from Numtums ..... who sings "I love my nose it's a part of me!!!"

I absolutely love the name Seren and wanted to use it for DD2 but was shouted down by DH. I like Mali to only it reminds me of Sali Mali

It fits into that "Welsh but not too Welsh" category which makes it popular. Similar to Ffion and Cerys/Carys.

I've never heard of Aneira, only Eira (Snow) but there's lots of Welsh names that have that an- prefix. I couldn't cope with the mispronunciation of the 'ei' sound. Seren would probably be mispronounced too but in a more tolerable way.

My 4 year old is Seren. We aren't Welsh but loved it.

We have only met one other Seren, also 4 years old.

We are in the Midlands.
