Thoughts on the name Seren?

LadyGiraffe123 · 07/03/2017 16:00

Hi all - I am new to Mumsnet!

I am Welsh, my partner is English and we live in England so would like a Welsh girls name that is easy to pronounce for English speakers.

I was just wondering peoples opinion on the name Seren? Seren seems to be the most consistent name for us throughout the pregnancy however I have seen on recent articles that Seren is in the top 10 "trendy" names predicted for 2017 (which puts me off).

I know Seren is popular in Wales but is it becoming more popular in England too? I am concerned that it will become tacky.

Thanks!

Love it. It would be on our list for a future DD2 but I think Seren and Celyn might be too similar/cliché Grin

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/03/2017 18:15

I ❤️ Seren, such a pretty name.

PetalMettle · 07/03/2017 18:17

I absolutely love it. I don't know any irl but there's a British runner

FrenchLavender · 07/03/2017 18:22

I have never met a Seren but it has been suggested/mentioned A LOT over the last few years on MN, as have other Cornish and Welsh names, which seem to have taken over from the 90's and 00's Celtic/irish/Scots name craze.

Seren is a pretty name and if you love it then chose it, but don't be under the illusion that it is going to be an unusual or underused choice, I think the opposite is about to be true.

WhiskyChick · 07/03/2017 18:27

I adore the name, if I'm ever lucky enough I'll be using the name.

Losgunna · 07/03/2017 18:33

I think it's a beautiful name. Very elegant. I'm not Welsh and don't normally favour Welsh names but Seren is a favourite. (much nicer than Serena)

Ulysses · 07/03/2017 18:37

I really like it. I also like Serena as well but I guess the pronunciation is different.

imthelastsplash · 07/03/2017 18:50

I know 2 serens and they are pronounced differently - it's a lovely name - I love the name nerys

bingandabong · 07/03/2017 18:55

Occadodo it's not from numtums it's from Abada (think it's spelt correctly) Seren, Harry and Ella, i think Seren is the one who loves to fly GrinI now have this song stuck in my head...

OP it is a beautiful name!

5BlueHydrangea · 07/03/2017 19:03

I love it. And the meaning 'star'. My DD's name means 'light' so would be a good combination.
I imagine people might go 'Sarah?' If they've not heard it before though.

RuthB4 · 07/03/2017 19:05

It's pretty. I know a 3 year old Seren in SE England. According to the darkgreener website, it's currently number 132 in England and Wales.

5BlueHydrangea · 07/03/2017 19:06

bingandabong Seren is the bat in Abadas, now I'm singing it too! Tis good though..

Shelvesoutofbooks · 07/03/2017 19:06

Seren is actually slavic slang for "I'm having a shit." Grin

Sophronia · 07/03/2017 22:01

I prefer Mali

mum2be2boys · 08/03/2017 16:35

I love the name Seren! It has got a beautiful meaning too :-) It was on my list of names for a girl, but bump is another blue one!

I know one Seren (who is 11), but her family are Welsh and they moved here (SW England) a couple of years ago. Definitely doesn't strike me as a popular name in real life (but does get mentioned on here quite often I think)

MarcelineQueen · 08/03/2017 20:34

I live on the Welsh border and know of only two seren's under 10, so not that many.

LOVE Aneira! Had it in my list for DD, if I have another I will definitely be pushing for it with DP.

OpalIridescence · 08/03/2017 20:36

Lovely name

MarcelineQueen · 08/03/2017 20:37

Personally I wouldn't go for Efa if you're in England as the pronunciation will be butchered. Seren, Mali, Aneira are much nicer and easier to pronounce for non-Welsh speakers

sleeplessinderbyshire · 08/03/2017 23:23

I love Seren but I'm Biased because it's my daughter's name.

Dixiestamp · 09/03/2017 00:10

Ooh, those Abadas kids have gorgeous voices...completely goes off point of thread!
I teach in various schools and you'll usually get one or two Serens in each school (South Wales Valleys area).

Dixiestamp · 09/03/2017 00:11

ps one of my DC has an Abadas name ;-)

Meowstro · 09/03/2017 00:42

It's a beautiful name but I do know 3 people with babies called Seren within the last year. I like Efa too, especially as it's not a name you hear of much.

Izzyathome · 09/03/2017 07:04

Not keen really but only because it feels like a weak word, I find it hard work to say out loud. It works nicely if you roll your r's, but otherwise I feel a bit like my mouth doesn't work properly when trying to say it! Like it needs a stronger consonant in the middle to structure it? Obvs that's only me though!

daisydalrymple · 09/03/2017 07:10

Lovely name. Only one Seren in my dcs' primary school (300 children) and have never met any others at soft play / toddler groups (north Wales)

eternalopt · 09/03/2017 07:31

Of the 4 Serens I know, 3 were born to Welsh parents living elsewhere, and you can see why - it's distinctly Welsh but easy to pronounce. Lovely meaning too (star). Yes, I think it is very popular, and getting more so, but popular names are that for a good reason - they're nice!
