Looking for a nice unisex/boy-type name for a girl.

List at the minute:

James
Andrea - NN Andy
Adrian
Allison - NN Ally
Charlie
Alex

Also accepting things that don't begin with A Blush

And Peta, always loved that

James isn't used as a female name in the UK Beached - Jamie would be okay.

I have a unisex name and absolutely hated the fact it was when I was pretty teen and teen. Not crazy about it now and often wish I'd had the initiative to change it (feels to late now). My mother swears I always loved it - presumably I did when I was 3...

I agree with Minipie

Choose a name with unisex nickname options.

Christian?

James this is not a unisex name. Just because some idiot in America calls their DD James doesn't make It a unisex name.

Andrea - NN Andy. I don't think enough people associate the name with boys for it to be considered a unisex name. Most people will just think it's a very 60's/70's girls name. But if you like it, so what?

Adrian. That is not a unisex name. to the best of my knowledge no girl was ever called Adrian. Adrienne is the feminine version.

Allison - NN Ally Same as Andrea. I don't think enough people associate it with being a boys a unisex name, in most people's book it's a pretty dated girl's name.

Charlie Nice but I prefer Charley for a girl, just to distinguish it a bit.

Alex Bit overused for my tastes

For a truly unisex name I love Robyn/Robin.

5moreminutes · 22/02/2017 18:44

Christian would be Christine / Christina surely?

You probably need to go with something more off the wall if you don't want to do a classic name with a unisex nickname or just give your DD an actual male name which she may love or may bitterly resent.

Something like Trinity or River or Rain I guess. Very marmite though. Bit too try hard.

Sascha ist unisex and a nice name, but in the UK most people assume girl where in the rest of Europe it's a boy's name (often only a boy's name)

Why not just

Georgia
Harriet
Charlotte
Alexandra

Type names with the unisex nickname?

5moreminutes · 22/02/2017 18:46

Actually Christian would be Christiana and Christina is the feminine form of Christopher isn't it?

zen1 · 22/02/2017 18:49

Christie (I know both a boy and a girl with this name)
Jude
Leah
Lou

PenguinDi · 22/02/2017 18:54

Robin is a good unisex name, I know a Robin (m) but goes by Rob most of the time.

Also FYI
Leslie - male
Lesley - female

Beachedwh4le · 22/02/2017 18:54

I went to school with a girl James when I was little, and in Spain it is apparently a girls name, but I take the point that it's more for boys here.

May try and stick with a "girls" name but with a "boy" NN on advice. Probably will keep James as a middle name to please DH though, then if she hates it she'll not have to use it often or we can call her James until she expresses discord?

I know a Leah (girl), who pronounces her name Lee, as opposed to Lee-ah. I guess the spelling is that of a girl's name though.

So many good suggestions!

Favourites so far:

Findley James
Dylan James
Olivia James
Matilda James

Probably now going to stay away from river if we're going with the weirder middle name thing.

FatOldBag · 22/02/2017 22:57

Why?

KeepCalm · 22/02/2017 22:57

I would suggest you use a feminine first name if you're going with James as a middle name. Give her a choice later on.

And I say this as the mother of three girls. One of whom who has a completely unisex name and the youngest of whom has a name predominately used for boys and frowned upon by all who hear it.......
