Esca - Celtic meaning: River
We are considering it for either boy or girl i.e as unisex name. Thoughts??

Sounds quite nice! As long as your surname isn't Late. or Go.

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 · 22/02/2017 12:29

Am at a serious hospital appointment and just lol!! . . .
Blush
It's a no from me. .

SoupDragon · 22/02/2017 12:30

It sounds kind of unfinished to my ears but that may just be because it's unfamiliar.

I would assume it was a girls name just because of the "a" ending though.

Liliblueberry · 22/02/2017 12:32

Thank you - so lovely to read a first positive response! The name goes rather well with surname too :)

Grin at Atrocius

I like it. You will probably get lots of people mishearing / mistaking it for Esther or Oscar, but if that doesn't bother you, go for it!

Liliblueberry · 22/02/2017 12:34

Hmm interesting - why would you think no?

OP posts:
Liliblueberry · 22/02/2017 12:35

Thanks frumble - yes that's also at the back of my mind!

Beijingyouth · 22/02/2017 12:35

...hmm it's a no from me, as i can't stop myself continuing the word..Esca as in Escalate Escalator.

Also for me it'd be definitely a girls name, not really suitable for boys.

But th word associations I mentioned above would put me off.

Beijingyouth · 22/02/2017 12:38

and on top of that "Escalate" is such a negative word...

lapetitesiren · 22/02/2017 12:38

It sounds like a girls name to me and quite pretty. I'm not sure it's suitable for a man.

weebarra · 22/02/2017 12:41

I like it. I'm sure I read a book set in Roman Britain where that was the name of one of the characters.

Cheesecake53 · 22/02/2017 12:47

I absolutely love it! Knowing an Ezra named boy - the a ending does not mean it is for girls only - for me at least.

Liliblueberry · 22/02/2017 12:56

Aww thank you everyone for your responses and explaining why you love or are not keen - so helpful to get people's opinions! I know our families probably would prefer a more conservative name... so hard to get unbiased opinions from them!
Weebarra - yes there are a couple of characters from books/series of that time who have the name Esca.
Cheesecake - so nice to read such a positive reaction :)

Rosemary sutcliffe fan?

I love it!

Liliblueberry · 22/02/2017 13:09

Pharisienne - yes!!! :)))

JazzAnnNonMouse · 22/02/2017 13:11

I like it

PlymouthMaid1 · 22/02/2017 13:13

Not hard on the ears but the person will have to spell it out all the lives and answer lots of questions about its provenance. Not sure that 'esc' is a great nickname either - actually peers might call him/her escape hatch, escape key etc

BroomstickOfLove · 22/02/2017 13:16

I'm thinking no, because of the Rosemary Sutcliffe character. I'd probably like it more otherwise.

SleepFreeZone · 22/02/2017 13:17

I think it's just a lifetime of spelling it so just No from me.

boatrace30 · 22/02/2017 13:17

I had a great aunt called Esca. I like it, but it's a girls name!!

xStefx · 22/02/2017 13:20

I like it for a girl, but not a boy

Allatseainthemidlands · 22/02/2017 13:26

I know an Esca- a wonderful woman- she told me it was a Latin name from the phrase "angelorum esca" which means something like a dainty morsel or mouthful. So it was "food of angels"
I like the name but maybe just because this particular person I know is such a delight.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 22/02/2017 13:30

I quite like it. Unlike most pp I think it sounds more masculine than feminine but I'd still like it as a name if I met a girl with it Smile

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 22/02/2017 13:35

I don't love it tbh. It's not awful but they'll have to spell it out for the rest of their lives and it doesn't sound like a full word.
Ezra for a boy is far preferable to my mind.

Cosmicglitterpug · 22/02/2017 13:35

I like it. Makes a nice change from Oliver and the Harrison/Jackson surname vibe that's popular at the moment.
