nn possibly Millie.

I like floral names but many are becoming overused. Amaryllis is my second favourite flower (even I think Freesia is too out there)

Yay or nay?

I underlined this name in a baby name book because I really liked it (I always liked Amy but it became really popular) I lent a book to a friend who laughed a lot at my name choices. I never had a daughter but I probably wouldn't have been brave enough to use it

MrsCaecilius · 22/02/2017 18:40

Brilliant. Bonkers, but brilliant. Love it!

reuset · 22/02/2017 21:47

Don't be silly, OP. It's really mawkish and sentimental. Unless you're naming a doll or something from Mills and Boon then it's not good.

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 22/02/2017 21:52

Prefer amethyst

Laquila · 22/02/2017 21:54

I quite like it. You might also like Dahlia, which I love. I've also always loved Fuschia, but wouldn't have been brace enough to use it!

Monkeyface26 · 22/02/2017 21:57

I really like it.
But then I also love Laquila's Dahlia, and Indigo's Araminta.
I really enjoy a good 'names' thread - there are always some fabulous ideas.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 22/02/2017 22:02

I knew a truly vile girl who had this as one of her (many) names so for that reason I'm saying no.

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2017 22:33

It's very fussy & frilly.

Cornishmumofone · 23/02/2017 00:57

I've never heard of it as a name before. How about Armorel, a Scillonian name?

Buntysoven · 23/02/2017 01:05

I think it's very pretty

Flippingecktucker · 23/02/2017 01:07

Amaryllis is a gorgeous name. I'm so bored of hearing the same old names for every kid I meet. It's like no-one can be bothered to think of anything else but Evie, Grace, Harry, George.

MakeItStopNeville · 23/02/2017 02:15

Shoutout I wonder if it's the same Amaryllis!

Underbeneathsies · 23/02/2017 04:20

I think it's so so... but I don't think it passes the playground test.

ifigoup · 23/02/2017 04:44

Use it!!! It's unusual but lovely. And has lots of potential nicknames: all those mentioned above, plus Ammy, Missy, Rissa, Lissa...

Mummamia14 · 23/02/2017 06:45

I think the name of the lady in Anne of green gables is derived from Amaryllis. Its Marilla.

SuperBeagle · 23/02/2017 07:31

Makes me think of Amarillo, Texas.

And then armadillos.

It's a no from me.

AuntieStella · 23/02/2017 07:34

I think of Milton 'to sport with Amaryllis in the shade'

I like it

theconstantinoplegardener · 23/02/2017 07:46

I think it's lovely. And very unusual too - so prob no other little Amaryllises in her class at school.

The Peter Kay song is Amarillo, guys! Not Amaryllis!

Laquila · 23/02/2017 13:37

Armorel is lovely! I also like Amalia.

user1477282676 · 23/02/2017 13:38

I know an Amaryllis. She changed her name to Elizabeth when she was 18.

elQuintoConyo · 23/02/2017 13:49

It is a nice name. But please don't shorten it to Milly Missy Ammy Lissy Lissa..... All totally wet-sounding.

If you're going to call your dd Amarylis then I think you should own it. 3 syllables isn't exactly in the Andromeda ballpark!

reuset · 23/02/2017 13:54

There's no proof Marilla came from Amaryllis, it could have easily come from Muriel or Mariel (and the many cnnected names) as is often also claimed. Amaryllis isn't mentioned in the Green Gables books anyway, any of them.

It makes me think of Amarillo too, Superbeagle Grin Or Virgil not really

WindwardCircle · 23/02/2017 13:56

I don't like twee flower names, but this one is almost the opposite, it sounds very proper botanical name and a bit of a mouthful so it's a no from me.

ifigoup · 23/02/2017 15:29

It's four syllables, not three, so in fact it IS in the Andromeda league!

mumoseven · 23/02/2017 19:36

I think its lovely! Wish I'd had another girl! Although we have an Amethyst so maybe too similar.
Rilla / Rilly for a nn. Or Ammy.
