Eugenie?

I don't understand why I never hear it.
I think it's pretty (heard a lot worse) but have yet to meet a little Eugenie. Not seen it suggested on here either.
Does Sarah Ferguson hold the licence or am I the only one who likes it?

Princess Eugenie would put me off, but I'm a staunch republican. It might not matter much to other people

EightiethElement · 17/02/2017 22:46

Love it.

howtheheckdoidealwiththis · 17/02/2017 23:01

Beatrice is very popular so it hasn't been affected by the princess tag. I find it pretty to hear but ugly to see written down.

Jaguarana · 17/02/2017 23:01

I don't think it's pretty at all, hideous in fact. Reminds me of eugenics. Ugh.

howtheheckdoidealwiththis · 17/02/2017 23:05

I'm also uncertain on how to pronounce it properly.

Yoo-jane-ee
or
You-jennie

KatieKaboom · 17/02/2017 23:07

Eugenics. Yes. That. ^^

emwithme · 17/02/2017 23:10

My cat is Eugenie although it does tend to be shortened to either Genie-pie or pie-pie. Not that I'd suggest either of those for a small child Grin

ifcatscouldtalk · 17/02/2017 23:11

I do like this name but it's also not very me either. That probably makes no sense!

TreeTop7 · 17/02/2017 23:16

The pronounciation faff puts me off, as an OP said. Along with the lazy Duke of York and his grim ex wife (although the daughters seem pleasant, in fairness).

SuperBeagle · 18/02/2017 00:37

I don't like it, in looks or pronunciation.

It also reminds me of eugenics.

dontpokethebear · 18/02/2017 00:45

I always thought it was Yoo-Jane-nee, but the J in Jane sounding a bit more like the French 'je'.

SuperBeagle · 18/02/2017 00:48

It's always been pronounced yoo-genie where I'm from.

In French, it sounds a bit like aw-zhenny. I only know this because there was a Eugenie (Greek) in my French class at uni and I thought her name was Jenny for a long time.

fluentinsarcasm · 18/02/2017 01:04

But is it any worse in pronunciation and looks than say Persphone, which is always getting suggested?
I suspect it would be far more popular if it didn't have the Royal connection.

SuperBeagle · 18/02/2017 01:06

I don't like Persephone either. It's also ugly sounding.

Beatrice is popular, so I don't think the royals have anything to do with it.

fluentinsarcasm · 18/02/2017 01:12

Lazy Duke of York and his grim ex wife
I think it has.

MimiSunshine · 18/02/2017 05:04

i like it and also go with Yoo-Jane-Nee but with a french sounding Je for Jane but I think it's one of those names that people don't really know how to pronounce and potentially think the Je bit makes it pretentious (well maybe just the people I know)

Notagain2017 · 18/02/2017 07:39

Beautiful name. Never met one in real life.

AmaDablam · 18/02/2017 07:59

I remember when Princess Eugenie was born and my mum saying it's a lovely name but they're pronouncing it all wrong, it should be “oo-je-NEE". Unlike a pp I find it quite pretty written down but find the anglicised "yoo-janey" jarring and you'd never get people to say it the "proper" way this side of the channel.

SomewhereNow · 18/02/2017 08:04

There's also the tennis player Eugenie Bouchard but iirc she was named after Princess E as her mum's a royal family nut Grin.

SuperBeagle · 18/02/2017 08:49

Omg. Her twin's name is Beatrice, and her other siblings are also named after royals. That's the cringiest thing I've read this year.

Cinnamon84 · 18/02/2017 08:52

I think it's quite cute. Don't really like the look of it written down though

harderandharder2breathe · 18/02/2017 09:16

I think it's an ugly name sorry

Beatrice is lovely though!

IntoTheDeep · 18/02/2017 09:22

Not a fan.

It probably doesn't help that the only Eugenie I've heard of is the princess.

(Beatrice, on the other hand, is a name I've come across in other places, so I've got other connotations with that which dilute the royal connection)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/02/2017 09:24

Not keen

reuset · 18/02/2017 10:23

Horrible name. Some odd pronunciations. How are you pronouncing it, OP?

Persephone follows different pronunciation 'rules' not difficult to get right, especially if you know it is Greek.
