Athena or Lydia?

DH finally gave in last night and said "if you want Lydia that badly, I don't mind. Call her Lydia, and she'll be beautiful" Grin

However, we also really like Athena and I'm unsure what's nicer, Athena or Lydia?

I'll save the repeat topic of middle names for another date Confused

Athena

mum2be2boys · 17/02/2017 09:05

Lydia :-)

SuperBeagle · 17/02/2017 09:06

I'm not a fan of either...

Athena is very aspirational, IMO, and the association with it is so strong that it may well end up being a burden to your DD. I don't see it as any different to using Zeus or Aphrodite. They're all so well known that I can just imagine they might be a difficult name to live up to.

Lydia is objectively a nice name, but Chlamydia (nickname of the Lydia I knew) would put me off entirely. The Lydia I knew attempted to get people to call her Lia in the end (didn't work).

Athena.

Rats. I've reported the duplicate.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/02/2017 09:11

Athena.

Like Super, I knew a Lydia who was called Chlymydia by some.

GTS · 17/02/2017 09:11

Athena

Blueisthecolour9 · 17/02/2017 09:12

I have to admit Super, I'd never heard of it until I started ttc, and I know who Zeus/Hercules is so she must be at least a little less popular than them in mythology...

Lydia chlamydia is 100% what puts me off Lydia

I know a couple of Lydias, and have never heard of the Chlamydia link.

Both Princess names in my head.
Lydia is more conventional.
Athena brings to mind the poster shop of the 1980s.

tinytoucan · 17/02/2017 09:19

Athena was on my list had DS been a girl, but I think I'd have chickened out using it anyway! I love it but I'm not sure if it sounds pretentious? I don't mean that to offend but it's how I felt when I was considering it myself.

I know a 10 year old Lydia, I don't think she gets teased for her name (although I'm not really close enough to know). I think it's pretty.

Artandco · 17/02/2017 09:21

Athena or Althea

Lydia Chlamydia

Artandco · 17/02/2017 09:21

Sorry Alethea

Raines100 · 17/02/2017 10:00

Lydia is beautiful. I'm struggling to worry about the chlamydia thing. It's not like Lydia is in the word. It just rhymes. We could spend all day thinking of crap things our names rhymes with. People still choose Millie despite it rhyming with willy, or Charlotte with harlot, etc.

Athena just makes me think of the goddess. It's a nice name, but I wouldn't call my kids Aphrodite or Zeus.

Bloomed · 17/02/2017 10:03

Athena is great

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/02/2017 10:14

Really don't like Lydia, sorry.
Lydia Chlamydia/Lydia Teapot.
Athena is classy and beautiful.
Also like Althea.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/02/2017 10:18

What about Aphra ?

CanISayOfHerFace · 17/02/2017 10:25

My mum said I shouldn't call my son Frank because of, you know, Frank The Wank 😂

I've never heard anyone else say this. Ever Hmm

CanISayOfHerFace · 17/02/2017 10:26

I like Athena though.

Marcipex · 17/02/2017 10:38

Athena is lovely.

I used to like Lydia until I heard chlamydia , ruined it for me sadly.

Fresta · 17/02/2017 11:08

Agree with everything Raines said.

No wonder kids get teased when grown adults think like this. Weird.

Sugar Lydia teapot ??? What's this?

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 17/02/2017 11:14

Like it. Nice nickname Thea

Jooni · 17/02/2017 11:26

I don't get the Lydia chlamydia thing. They're just 2 words that rhymes ffs. Like someone else said, you can find something unpleasant to rhyme with most popular names and that doesn't put people off. Use it if you love it!

I like Athena, it is a bit grand sounding but pretty and strong.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/02/2017 11:28

Ha ha, nothing sordid Fresta !
Knock knock
Who's there ?
Lydia
Lydia who ?
Lydia Teapot. (The lid of your tea pot)

Jooni · 17/02/2017 11:28

There's also Leda, which is a less obviously mythological/goddess name than Athena, and sounds like Lydia without the rhyming issue. Unusual but not wacky. Does that appeal at all?
