Athena or Lydia?

DH finally gave in last night and said "if you want Lydia that badly, I don't mind. Call her Lydia, and she'll be beautiful" Grin

However, we also really like Athena and I'm unsure what's nicer, Athena or Lydia?

I'll save the repeat topic of middle names for another date Confused

Lydia's been in the top 100 for over a decade, and still very popular. It cannot bother people in reality. I don't know any Lydias who have been teased for their names. Once people reached the age of being aware of what Chlamydia was, you'd hope they'd know better.

Athena is more popular than I though, comparatively speaking, that is. It's just ok. I prefer Lydia.

TheLivingAsheth · 17/02/2017 11:32

I like Lydia best, it is beautiful. Athena is the 80s shop for me (so uncultured!) but also lovely.

I also think it's silly to avoid names because they rhyme with something bad. Do we have to avoid Charlotte (harlot), Sue (loo, poo), Jane (pain),etc etc?

llangennith · 17/02/2017 11:34

Lydia. That other name is weird.

DramaAlpaca · 17/02/2017 11:35

Lydia. It's beautiful.

hlc123 · 17/02/2017 12:03

Athena

It's my favourite girls name but doesn't go with our surname

SockswithSandals · 17/02/2017 12:09

Athena. It's beautiful

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 17/02/2017 13:34

Lydia is beautiful.

Sophronia · 17/02/2017 14:13

Lydia

Coey2016 · 17/02/2017 14:42

Both are very pretty. I Have never come across the Lydia chlamydia thing either

FartnissEverbeans · 17/02/2017 20:28

They're both lovely names. Leda is a great suggestion.

Athena is pretty well known as a mythological character, I'd say.

I'm laughing at Milly Willy, Frank the Wank, Sue the Poo etc Grin

lottieandmia · 17/02/2017 20:30

Lydia - lovely name.

Dinnerout1 · 17/02/2017 20:32

Athena.. Means The Greek Godess of love.. Beautiful name

TheLivingAsheth · 17/02/2017 21:19

She's actually the Greek goddess of wisdom and war. Aphrodite is love.

Dinnerout1 · 17/02/2017 21:33

Ah right.. 😮 my Greek friend told me that obviously got mixed up

JustWantToBeDorisAgain · 17/02/2017 21:39

Lydia - but I'm biased as I have a 9 yr old so far she has never had the clamydia comments. Her nn at home is Lula

I loved her name from the off and that has never changed ( sometimes wish I'd been braver with dd1)

harderandharder2breathe · 18/02/2017 09:24

Lydia definitely, I've known a couple wnd Lydia clamydia never occurred

TempsPerdu · 18/02/2017 09:30

Athena - love it.

Lydia's OK but I just find it a bit insipid in comparison. The chlamydia thing never occurred to me though!

boldlygoingsomewhere · 18/02/2017 13:12

I love Lydia and would never have linked it with chlamydia!

There are so many beautiful names of Greek origin - some must be due a revival: Penelope, Chloe, Iris, Helen, Phaedra, Phoebe, Hermione, Melissa, Thea...

BoboChic · 18/02/2017 13:13

Athena

EweAreHere · 18/02/2017 13:25

Athena is too much.

Lydia is ok, but I prefer Leda, as someone as suggested.

My daughter came this close to being called Linnéa (or Linnea)... if she'd been a twin, we likely would have used it.

NeepNeepNeep · 18/02/2017 13:28

What about Mary? I hear it's coming back.

dimdommilpot · 18/02/2017 15:01

I have a Lydia. Never heard of the clamydia thing other than on here. I know a couple of older Lydia's who never got called it either. When naming her though I did like Orla and the Oral thing put me off that.

Johanna197610 · 19/02/2017 08:26

I'm going to be 100% bias as my beautiful daughter is called Lydia. We always get comments about how lovely the name is. I also have to say that no one has ever tried to rhyme it or even mentioned the fact it rhymes.

KayTee87 · 19/02/2017 10:46

Lydia is lovely. Athena is too 'try hard' imo.

PetalMettle · 19/02/2017 11:49

I've always liked Lydia but DH as soon as I said it mentioned the chlamydia thing.
What about Lina? ThAts sort of a combination of both
