Iona Woodland

My husband and I are going to be having a baby this year. We haven't found outage gender but like Iona for a girl. Our surname is Woodland.

Does Iona Woodland sound silly because the surname is a noun?

Yes, sorry.

Isla?

Treewall · 12/02/2017 21:14

Yes, it's ridiculous. Sorry.

A little... sorry, sounds like you've just purchased a small forest Sad

blueskyinmarch · 12/02/2017 21:15

I guess it is slightly strange - I own a woodland? I do like Iona though.

SavoyCabbage · 12/02/2017 21:15

Yes, yes it does sound sillly.

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 12/02/2017 21:15

Slightly daft. Iona is lovely though. Naomi and Hermione sound similar.

Wolfiefan · 12/02/2017 21:16

I own a woodland.
Yes. Weird.

ClusterFuckTadpole · 12/02/2017 21:16

I own a woodland?
That's what it'll be on the playground!

Cakingbad · 12/02/2017 21:16

How about Ivor for a boy?

reuset · 12/02/2017 21:17

Do you?

Choose something else! Grin

Try Ilona? (ill-o-na) is that any better

mrswoodland · 12/02/2017 21:21

Thanks for the feedback. After a name that is not extremely common like Isla is but a name that isn't too difficult to spell. Hermione is beautiful but a bit too posh!

We discounted Iona for the same reason because our surname is a place and it just sounded odd. We also had to lose Isla as it sounded like Isle of (location). Also gone were names that were also places (Angus, Lewis, Harris etc) because when out together with our surname it sounded like part of an address! Sigh.

Piffpaffpoff · 12/02/2017 21:23

-put- together, not out together!

Prettybaffled · 12/02/2017 21:25

I agree with everyone else. What about Fiona?

MalibuSeafood · 12/02/2017 21:26

The Italian name 'Ilaria' is a pretty alternative if you fancied something similar.

MikeUniformMike · 12/02/2017 21:31

How about Laura as a middle name?
Iona Laura Woodland sounds even better.

mininionsteve · 12/02/2017 21:35

How about Diona, one letter difference and no forest purchases. Does it need to go with any other names?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/02/2017 21:37

Alana Woodland
Elena Woodland
Ivana Woodland

I went to school with an Iona Ford. Poor girl never heard the end of it. So for that reason I wouldn't although it is a lovely name

HarmlessChap · 12/02/2017 22:04

Unless convention changes, she will likely also not want to from relationships that might lead to marriage with men who have a noun for a surname.

Who would want to be :-
Iona Ford
Iona House
Iona Cage
Iona Field
Iona Stone
Iona Guppy
Iona Castle

and so on

As an aside a friend who's surname is Fish nearly called his daughter Courtney......

AnnetteKertan · 12/02/2017 22:04

Iona is lovely but is a bit silly with your surname.

Ariana
Georgina
Myla
