Lynn for our son's middle name?

What do you think? We will only be having one child. It was my mum's name. It's unisex, but obviously known as a female name. First name will be Tobias (Toby).

Tobias Lynn?

Will it be okay?

I really wouldn't use Lynn.
How about Lyndon or Lynden?

MyWineTime · 01/02/2017 15:41

Can you imagine a guy in his 20s explaining his middle name is Lynn after his gm and someone taking the piss?
I went to a wedding last a couple of months ago. The groom had a very unusual middle name which all his friends found funny when they heard it.
That's the name that all his mates have been using for him ever since.

My DH absolutely detests his middle name and avoids using it whenever he can. Because it is on his birth certificate it also ended up on loads of other official documents.

Yes, in addition to piss-taking during the years 20-29, I can also imagine piss-taking over the years 6-19 and in the 30s. Before and after those ranges the piss-taking will be less.

NamaNush · 01/02/2017 16:00

No need to be facetious. It was just an example.

Just can't imagine an adult laughing at someone's name. Surely there's more to life than that.

Er, yes! As I wrote earlier, my brother's middle name is Courtney and he gets it ripped out of him rather a lot! I also join in because yes, there is more to life, but he's my brother and it's my job to mock him Grin At his wedding, 'Courtney' was met with laugh and a cheer! Of course people take the piss-it's funny!

TwentyCups · 01/02/2017 17:47

Lyndon is a great suggestion, I like it a lot!

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 01/02/2017 18:53

Lynn Davies, Olympic Long Jumper, he was Welsh I think,

TroysMammy · 01/02/2017 18:55

I also know some Welsh men called Lynn.

TroysMammy · 01/02/2017 18:59

Idrather yes, you are correct. In line with Welsh traditions he was nicknamed Lynn the Leap. Just like Jones the milk and Evans the coal. Grin

There is currently a thread running about how boy's names become girl's name and cease being boy's names and why this might possibly be...

Go for it, OP: it makes for a lovely name and the sentiment behind it is lovely too.

n0ne · 01/02/2017 19:37

I like it! Sounds perfectly unisex to me. I actually prefer it for a man (like Kim)

DumbledoreBumbledore · 01/02/2017 19:43

My DH is called Llyn. He is Welsh and he wasn't teased as a child in Wales.

Ghfst · 01/02/2017 19:47

Lindsay is unisex. Lin?

Ghfst · 01/02/2017 19:49

Adults really think male Courtney's are funny? I know one of each.

slightlyglitterbrained · 01/02/2017 22:49

Have worked with a Courtney in his 20s in a massively bantery environment. Never heard anyone utter a peep about his name.

MyWineTime · 01/02/2017 22:50

I'm going to guess that you're not a bloke!
Sensible middle aged women probably wouldn't laugh, plenty of people would find it hilarious and would have no interest in the sentimentality of it.
I must admit that I would find it amusing. I do think that some parents are amazingly self-indulgent over their choice of names.

BalaRua · 01/02/2017 22:57

I really like Tobias Lynn. I'd go for it OP.

ShangriLaLaLa · 01/02/2017 23:15

Agree - lovely name. Lots of Lyns here in Wales. I went to school with a couple of them and nobody would have thought twice about it. They were great boys too who clearly had no problem with their name. It's good and strong and it has a lovely family connection for you - the very best of reasons to choose it! In my experience, honouring a family member in this way will give the child so much more than just a name to carry forward - It has nothing to do with being sensible Hmm or middle aged Hmm,

NamaNush · 01/02/2017 23:16

You'd find someone with the middle name
Lynn amusing? Right. Maybe I could get it if someone was saying they wanted to call their child some ludicrous after their second cousin twice removed but seriously, Lynn? Courtney? 'Hilarious' Confused...???

I think I'm over invested in this thread (especially as the op has clearly and quite rightly given up!). However my mother is dead and I think it's a lovely idea to include a loved one's name into your child's name; in fact I've done so with with my DD and will do with my next child too. My DC will have never met their grandmother and I would like for a part of her to be included in their names. Maybe this is what the OP is aiming for too.

Oh and I'm not middle aged!

Katielou75 · 01/02/2017 23:55

As others have said Lyn is fairly common for men in South Wales- I know lots. Most are called Lyndon, shortened to Lyn.

EmmaWoodlouse · 02/02/2017 20:18

I've met an older Welsh man called Lynn and there's also the rock singer Joe Lynn Turner. I don't think it's the girliest of names and don't really see a problem with it as a middle name. To those who say he'll get teased, in my experience people with quite unusual names don't get teased if they are well liked, and if they're not well liked they'll be teased about something whatever their names are!

MrsMeeseeks · 03/02/2017 15:05

Yes, why not? I know two male Lyns.

DragonNoodleCake · 03/02/2017 15:06

I know a male Lynn, I understand it's common in Wales
