masculine names for girls

Missyb15 · 23/01/2017 19:06

i really like names that are quite masculine and are either unisex or seen as more male

for example the names for girls that i like are james, andi, frances, bobbie, Robyn, Jaime, charley and billie.

What are you opinions on using unisex/more masculine names for a girl

Pascale
Harri
Bobbie
Shaun
Devon

Hilary and Valerie used to be boys names. And Jocelyn.

I don't know any male Robins younger than their late 40s.

Beebeeeight · 23/01/2017 20:16

Bertrand makes a good point about it being socially acceptable for girls being given boys names but boys not being given girls names.

Op a good way to spot a masculine name is to hear what the ending sound is.

Boys names usually end in consonant sounds.

Girls names usually end in vowel sounds.

Once you see this it makes you look at all name trends differently.

Ah I didn't know Jocelyn was a boys name, I knew a male Joss and was always jealous of his super cool name.

MrsMeeseeks · 23/01/2017 20:17

I love Charlie, Billie and Bobby/Bobbie for a girl. Roberta nn Bobbie is top of my list for a girl. I also love unisex names: Kelly, Stacy, Kim, (though those three are a bit 70s-sounding now).

lumela

I know a male teen robin, they love their name.

elQuintoConyo · 23/01/2017 20:19

Lesley
Hilary
Both boy/girl names.

How about Brian? Morris? Sinclair? Donald? Barnard? Wasn't Nursey in Blackadder called Bernard?

WankersHacksandThieves · 23/01/2017 20:20

I'm not a fan. To me it sends the message that you'd rather have a boy instead. Plus when the use of a boy's name for a girl hits a point then it can no longer be used for boys and then another name is removed from circulation for boys. There are plenty of lovely/strong girls names in all sorts of styles without resorting to feminising a boy's name by changing a letter/adding ella or ina onto the end or downright just using a boy's name without changing it. It's as if it somehow makes your child, and you by association, so "cool" Hmm

I'd never noticed that but you're right! Maybe I should be looking for girls' names ending in consonant sounds. I feel a thread coming on...

FriendofBill · 23/01/2017 20:21

I hear you Bertrand
A boy having a traditionally 'girls' name would be seen as a step down.

On the other hand, some folk just don't like that 'girly' image that some names evoke.

MysticTwat · 23/01/2017 20:23

Nici, Nicky, Nick

Eminybob · 23/01/2017 20:24

I love Leigh and Ashley, but most of all Jaime.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 23/01/2017 20:25

I love Billie and Jaime.

What about Francesca nn Frankie? Perfect!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 23/01/2017 20:26

Sam is a great name.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 23/01/2017 20:29

I love Spencer and Wren on a girl.

stabbybitch · 23/01/2017 20:36

MrsMeeks - Stacy is a boys name to me even though I only know girls called this. I love it and Jody also.

The other way round, these names only sound female to me

Frankie
Harley
Billie

LumelaMme · 23/01/2017 20:38

Crikes, Mystic.
Perhaps I should get out more...!

CremeEggThief · 23/01/2017 20:42

Rowan
Ashton

MysticTwat · 23/01/2017 20:44

It's TFB to you meh Wink

He the sort of lad who owns stuff, and other people are just idiots if they don't like it.

millymae · 23/01/2017 20:47

Names like Jaime, Billie and Charley don't strike me as being masculine at all.

Eryl, Alex or Peta would be my choice.

CatRash · 23/01/2017 21:13

What about Georgina - could be George or Georgie for a masculine feel or if she eventually decided she wanted to be more feminine could use Gina or Georgia.

I think a could-go-either-way-name is a good idea as it does depend on the girl/woman she becomes a then she can decide.

Same could apply to Samantha or Charlotte

BertrandRussell · 23/01/2017 21:17

Harriet's good name.......
