I appreciate they are very different sounding names- What are people's opinions? Quinn potentially for a boy or girl.

Thanks

OP if you like a name then don't allow complete strangers to put you off. Mumsnet is a small section of society & the opinion of us lot here may be completely out of sync with the rest of the world?

Personally I don't mind either name. Think Quinn could suit either sex & have never heard of quim being a slang term. I also think Dolly could easily suit a teen or adult; after all, there's plenty of older Ollie's (admittedly mostly male) & it's a very similar name.

I hate the "if you like it use it" line.

If you like it, but other people point out that it's a bit infantile or like a rude word, consider that people in the real world might think the same way then change your own name to it. And don't risk it for someone who can't consent.

I can't see Dolly on anything but a doll or a pet tbh. I can't see anyone taking a 'Dolly' seriously in a professional situation either.

Topseyt · 24/01/2017 01:53

Neither.

Dolly is either a sheep, a baby doll or dolly mixture sweets (which I can't stand). Don't lumber a child with it.

Quinn is a surname, but to me not a first name for all the potential reasons given by others. Not for me.

"And now over to the newsroom where there is a breaking announcement from Prime Minister, Dolly Boston".

Nope. It just doesn't quite sound right, does it...?

Dr Quinn Medicine woman :)

I know a boy called Quinn but it also works well as a name for a girl/woman. Never heard of that slang, but then if we ignored all possible names that could be endangered by slang there would be no Williams or Johns either.

Pipilangstrumpf · 25/01/2017 19:33

Never heard of quim either...Hmm

Pipilangstrumpf · 25/01/2017 19:33

And yes Will(y) is surprisingly popular!

Nonameyet1 · 25/01/2017 19:51

I love Quinn and really wanted it for my girl but people put me off, I still love it though, great sounding name.

I can't tell the story because it will out me. But I knew a child called Quinn. And a mutual friend insisted she was called Quim. It was a most awkward scenario. She wasn't aware of Quim being a slang term and had just misheard the mother on introductions. Unfortunately she was also the overbearing type who liked to correct people 'no no darling, she's called Quim. With an M'. Shock

No one mishears Will as Willy. But it is apparently easy to mishear Quinn.

I love them both! My dh calls me Dolly so I may be biased, and I follow Dolly Alderton on Instagram, she is defiantly a strong independent woman.

I know a little girl named Quinn, and never once have I thought it sounds like quim, and yes I am familiar with the term. It's a great name. If mn says no, I would definitely go for it
