I'm about to pop and I felt set on a name for a girl and I've always loved it. Pippa, not Phillipa! But lately while googling and having a snoop on MN I've noticed it's a bit of a disliked name!

Maybe I'm bias as I've loved this name since childhood but can anyone explain why it's so disliked? I'm not living/from the uk so the Royal association doesn't matter. And lots of people have mentioned that it's slang in many other countries for rude words but this doesn't really bother me. There is lots of other names in different countries/languages which mean something strange/ slang/ dirty in the English language so it doesn't really put me off! Smile

Chances are in today's world your DD will want to travel. I could never name my child a name that had so many sexual meanings on other languages. If u r set on Pippa please do the poor girl a favour and call her Philipa. In any case Pippa is harsh and quite ugly.

I absolutely love the name pippa and it was my favourite name for dd. Dh and I totally agreed too bonus! However much to my annoyance I too discovered that in many countries it is slang for all sorts. So we changed it. I couldn't stand the thought of some narrow minded idiot at school googling it and the tourment it could cause.
I was gutted as was totally set on it! We do holiday in Italy and I can't predict where dd would travel. Wasn't keen on Philippa either.
Have decided if we get a pet one day I shall call it pippa lol!

Yes I love it
No I didn't use it in the end.

Good luck x

My sister is a Pippa and works with loads of international types. She's a total badass and loves her name, I think the other translations are a point of pride for her! She's never had any issues with it at all, and if she did, she could introduce herself as 'Pip'. Also, as another person with a 'nn' as a first name, I say go with the name you like and are planning on using. My parents hated the long versions of our names so went with what they liked
