The name Pippa...

I'm about to pop and I felt set on a name for a girl and I've always loved it. Pippa, not Phillipa! But lately while googling and having a snoop on MN I've noticed it's a bit of a disliked name!

Maybe I'm bias as I've loved this name since childhood but can anyone explain why it's so disliked? I'm not living/from the uk so the Royal association doesn't matter. And lots of people have mentioned that it's slang in many other countries for rude words but this doesn't really bother me. There is lots of other names in different countries/languages which mean something strange/ slang/ dirty in the English language so it doesn't really put me off! Smile

I'm so glad the majority like it Smile although I think I like it so much at this point, my mind couldn't be changed!

I initially didn't like the name Phillipa very much but I could come around to it.

I still don't understand the language issue. Isn't there plenty of English names which mean something else in a different language? A friend of mine named their baby Billy (Bill daily) and found out recently Bill mean

...means ass cheek in Dutch apparently! Similar to how there are plenty of names in other languages which mean 'rude' things in English. I still don't see how it would put you off the name Hmm

I think putting Phillipa on the BC when you don't like it and actually want to call your child pippa is a ridiculous suggestion. If you like Pippa then do use Pippa.

I read the suggestion that she may want to live abroad in the future and I can honestly say It never crossed my mind when naming my children that I should consider how the name would sound in every country of the world!!!!!

1horatio · 07/01/2017 10:52

reality I agree...
Pippa, could also stand for Penelope, Pippilotta (certainly a rather bold choice)Persephone, Perrine or maybe Perenelle?

BratFarrarsPony · 07/01/2017 10:55

it means 'cunt' in Poland...'blowjob' in Italy...'shag' in Sweden...

BratFarrarsPony · 07/01/2017 11:00

..also 'blowjob' in Greece.

I really wouldnt inflict this name on your child, although it does sound nice in England. It would appear to be the rudest girl's name on the planet!

1horatio · 07/01/2017 11:01

brat don't forget Greece...

WineGate · 07/01/2017 12:51

@froggers1 does it bother you knowing what it means in other languages?

I just feel that we live in a world where travel is the norm and there are so many cultures/ languages we are exposed to now that surely a name meaning something else is something that can be looked passed/ got over!

That's interesting. I would have argued that seeing as we live in such a connected world a name that refers to sexual acts in at least 4 languages should be avoided.

I'm not saying I'm right, btw. But that's simply what I personally thought when naming DD.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 07/01/2017 13:14

I'm sorry but no matter how much I loved a name if I found out it had a coarse meaning in another country (or in this case several countries!) the name would immediately be taken off the table.

If someone asked for feedback on the names Fanny or Randy 99.9% of the responses would be 'don't do it'. And their meanings are much milder than Pippa.

1horatio · 07/01/2017 13:17

Btw, essere una pippa can also mean being useless in Italian.

Soubriquet · 07/01/2017 13:20

I have a Molly which mn hates

Apparently it should be Margaret nn Molly

But I hate Margaret and would never call her it so she's Molly. And Molly like Pippa has become a name in its own right

Call her Pippa. No one will care anymore

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/01/2017 13:35

It having coarse meaning in so many European languages would put me off entirely.

WineGate · 07/01/2017 14:21

Wow, it seems really split! I think it matters to some people but not to others. There is lots of names that mean other things in other languages and isn't there still a chance that a slang word could come around that would also be a name in some language!

froggers1 · 07/01/2017 14:33

I didn't know about all the other meanings. I'm not sure if it would have put me off. It's not ideal I grant you..

NeedANewHaircut · 07/01/2017 14:35

My name is phillippa and am know as Pippa. Some of the foreign doctors have sniggered when I've introduced myself to them. I also look after a lot of foreign Eastern European patients.....didn't realise u til this thread my name means cunt in Polish. God knows what they think when I introduce myself to them!!

If I go on holiday abroad I would introduce myself as phillippa to people.

TheNaze73 · 07/01/2017 14:36

I think it's a beautiful name.

An African friend of mine, called Nwanko, gets no stick despite the obvious connotations.

Don't water it down to Philippa either on the bc, if you don't like it

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 07/01/2017 14:36

Yeah but Pippa already means so many gross things that to me it seems like a no brainer to sort it into the No pile. Entirely your choice though, we all have different criteria when choosing a name.

BadToTheBone · 07/01/2017 15:50

I grew up with a Phillipa and a Pippa, they were great friends and still are and we're all 50 this year. Not that it matters to this thread, lol.

I'm a traditional name lover and I really like it, although I'd go Phillipa on the bc.

reuset · 07/01/2017 17:28

Philippa is great too. If you opt for Philippa then spell it this way with the one 'l' and two letter 'p' as it's the more usual spelling in the UK.

Shockers · 07/01/2017 17:34

That's the way mine's spelt, reuset. Someone once told me that's the Welsh spelling. My mum is Welsh, but I was named after her school friend who was English.

BadToTheBone · 07/01/2017 20:06

I wrote Philippa but then checked and thought I'd got it wrong so changed it, lol. I've just checked fb and my friend is 1 l and 2 p's.

MikeUniformMike · 07/01/2017 20:27

I like Philippa and know a few. Mainly known as Phil but one Flip and one Pippa. And there's Pip Archer, who is vile.

I would put Philippa on BC and use Pippa. If it's good enough for the Middletons...

CactusFred · 07/01/2017 20:36

I like it but I'd always use the full name as official one and shorten as required.

I also like Piper.

Shockers · 07/01/2017 20:46

I've just turned 50, bad; there must have been a little surge in Philippas in 66/67!
I can't be your friend though because I don't know any others personally!
