Blossom or Lyra?

MilkybarMars · 03/01/2017 10:25

We have liked both names for a while... Lyra from the Pullman books and Blossom from a song we both like. Now not sure what to do as this is baby number 4 and definitely the last!

Do you know any Blossom's or Lyra's? Do you think they are popular names? Advice on them appreciated. Thanks!

I work on a hospital ward and we would definitely scoff at a person named Blossom for having such a name sorry. Not so much for Lyra.

MilkybarMars · 05/01/2017 11:05

Is Blossom classed as more cutesie than daisy or poppy then?!

Lyra 100%. I love this name only wish I had chosen it for my DD.

1970sCarpet · 05/01/2017 11:11

I can't believe so many people think Lyra is beautiful, it just reads as 'Lycra' to me. Blossom is lovely at any age, I've know toddler Blossoms and adult ones and it suits them a lot. It doesn't need shortening to 'Bloss' Hmm. What is it with MN that every name must have a shortened version?

milky

I actually like Daisy.

However, Lyra is simply really lovely. Not overused, feminine and elegant. Blossom just can't keep up with it (imo).

How deeply unpleasant and unprofessional of you all. That's not something to be proud off. Hmm

Blossom is a cow's name in my head. Lyra is pretty, but is a made up name from a Philip Pullman novel. If you like the sound of Lyra (and I agree it's very pretty) and other people suggesting Flora, why not consider the classic, traditional and very lovely name, Laura?

1horatio · 05/01/2017 11:26

pink

It's the name of a constellation in the Northern sky.

MissSmiley · 05/01/2017 11:30

I know of two babies called Lyra. I think it's becoming a lot more popular.

LobsterQuadrille · 05/01/2017 11:31

I know one Lyra who is three - I think it's Trinny Woodall's daughter's name too (but could be wrong). Uncommon and nice. Not keen on Blossom - sounds like a Jamie Oliver child's name although it's not to my knowledge.

MiniMaxi · 05/01/2017 11:32

Lyra sounds much more grown up to me

I do know one adult Blossom but it could be better as a middle name as pp has suggested

notagiraffe · 05/01/2017 11:32

Lyra is gorgeous. Blossom is a bit silly. It sound slike a term of endearment not a real name. Like calling someone Pet Lamb or Lovey.

reuset · 05/01/2017 11:40

It's not really a proper name is it, that's the trouble. It's ridiculous. I'd put it in the Fifi, Hunny [sic] Bunny category of 'names' Grin It also sounds like a term of endearment you might receive from dear old granny.

Again, you didn't answer my question (Wink) think about the embarrassment of introducing yourself as Blossom. Watch the polite faces trying not to smirk.

Oh well, I try!

MilkybarMars · 05/01/2017 11:52

I don't feel I would be embarrassed to have either name or I wouldn't be considering them for one of my children! I'm not a big fan of traditional names, not that I dislike them just that I haven't chosen them for my other children so Laura wouldn't really fit unless I loved it ofcourse.

However, I asked for opinions I have certainly received them! I think there are positive and negative comments for both and I have learnt they are both my little pony names! So thanks for the advice!

Lyra is a Greek name, not made up! I agree Lyra seems to be becoming more popular but I'm not sure it will ever be in the top 20. The fact there are a lot of Lyla, Luna, Lilly's puts me off a little bit. Also husband would like his mums name as a middle name which almost rhymes with Lyra so that poses a problem........

Blossom is a 1920's name I believe... I don't think it's popular at all... I suppose it's a bit love or hate! But I think if I chucked my other three children's names into this thread they would have the same reaction!

More thinking to do... think I'll wait to see what she looks like!

Blossom making people think of cows...there is an artificial butter called 'Blossom' for that reason in a country far from the UK.
Lyra is very elegant and timeless.

reuset · 05/01/2017 12:05

Blossom is a 1920's name I believe..

Grin How so? Doesn't strike me as a typical 1920s name

Scarily Blossom is not in 'unusual' category with 90 of 'em born in 2015, 98 the year before. You see it hyphenated on occasion too, for some reason...

MilkybarMars · 05/01/2017 12:08

From nameberry...

some are reconsidering the old, more generic names like Flora and Posy and Blossom-- which was last in favor in the 1920's and still has a Floradora showgirl aura.

A real life namesake is jazz singer Blossom Dearie.

1horatio · 05/01/2017 12:09

So.... not a classic? According to nameberry people that like the name Blossom also like:

Horatio, Satchel is suggested as a similar name for people who like Blossom Grin

Blossom-- which was last in favor in the 1920's and still has a Floradora showgirl aura.

Hilarious! I don't think it has ever really been in favour (until recently, that is, judging by the stats)

roseteapot101 · 05/01/2017 12:20

blossom that's cute that's one of the power puff girls,Lyra sounds a bit to much like Lycra for me

1horatio · 05/01/2017 12:23

Well, they're simply evaluating the likes and dislikes of their registered users... which makes it actually a surprisingly useful tool, imo.

It also suggests Heather, Mariposa and Bluebell. I actually quite like those.

1horatio · 05/01/2017 12:23

But satchel... that's... just. No. Grin

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 05/01/2017 13:25

Lyra was our choice if our ds was a dd. It's is very elegant and it deserves to be growing in popularity.
Blossom is very different to Lyra and in my view too cutesy.

ViewBasket · 05/01/2017 14:52

I like Blossom, but personally am not so keen on Lyra.
