Pronunciation of Saoirse

Saoirse is my choice of name if I have a girl. I am sure it's pronounced Seer-sha however quite a few family members think it's ser-sha. Who is correct?

Do you know which regions say it which way? Im in the US now, but my family was originally from Kerry. Im naming my child this name, but I want to make sure Im pronouncing it properly. We have been saying "sare-sha" so far.

twinjocks · 25/04/2017 19:37

I think "Seer-sha" is used most often, with "Sare-sha" next.

Bringmesunshite · 25/04/2017 19:38

Doesn't that Irish actress (can't remember surname) say "like inertia". Saw her being interviewed a few times and this is what she said.

Kazzawazza69 · 26/04/2017 16:09

I always thought sor-sha but I'm English so what do I know!

SuperBeagle · 26/04/2017 21:09

Saoirse Ronan seems to say it as a sort of hybrid between Sare-sha and Ser-sha.

NotAMammy · 30/04/2017 20:45

I'd say 'Seersha' I think (I've said it so many times when reading this thread that I'm doubting myself!) But it definitely differs by region so I'd class most pronunciations as a 'whatever way your hold your mouth' difference rather than one being right and the rest being wrong. Apart from Cersai. That's just wrong!!! Oh and Sayorse....

Twinmummytobe · 30/04/2017 20:46

It's sor sha

harderandharder2breathe · 30/04/2017 20:53

Not Irish but have Irish family and I would say Seer-shuh

villainousbroodmare · 30/04/2017 21:22

Irish speaker. SEERsha in Munster Irish. SAREsha in Ulster Irish.
I wish Saoirse Ronan had chosen a better example as it's based on a very regional mispronunciation of the word 'inertia'.
Sorcha is another name entirely.

LynetteScavo · 30/04/2017 22:07

So is Sorcha pronounced Sorsha? Or is that yet another name?Confused

I

villainousbroodmare · 30/04/2017 22:11

Sorcha is pronounced SURRakha. It's roughly equivalent to Sarah.
Seoirse is pronounced SHOREsha. It's the Irish form of George.

squoosh · 30/04/2017 22:12

Sorcha is pronounced more or less like surrika. Although I have met the odd Sorcha who pronounced it as sore-sha. But it's wrong, as wrong as pronouncing Murdoch as mur-dosh.

squoosh · 30/04/2017 22:15

And on a Saoirse related note has anyone seen Song of the Sea? So lovely, and one of the characters is a little Saoirse.

NotAMammy · 30/04/2017 22:20

Squoosh I LOVE Song of the Sea. And The Secret of Kells. They make the most beautiful films.

aaahhhBump · 30/04/2017 22:26

In Scotland I know 2 Saoirses. They are both seer-sha. DHs 2nd cousin is a seer-sha too in County Kildare

squoosh · 30/04/2017 22:31

NotAMammy we just watched it for the first time today. Such a gorgeous film, and such a refreshing change from all the Pixar style stuff. I had a little cry at the end too 😅

I must watch The Secret of Kells next.

lalaland1985 · 01/05/2017 10:16

I started this thread back in December! I'm now due in 2 weeks and if the baby is a girl she will be called Saoirse (seersha) Maria. I love it.
