Pronunciation of Saoirse

Saoirse is my choice of name if I have a girl. I am sure it's pronounced Seer-sha however quite a few family members think it's ser-sha. Who is correct?

Do you know which regions say it which way? Im in the US now, but my family was originally from Kerry. Im naming my child this name, but I want to make sure Im pronouncing it properly. We have been saying "sare-sha" so far.

I think "Seer-sha" is used most often, with "Sare-sha" next.

Doesn't that Irish actress (can't remember surname) say "like inertia". Saw her being interviewed a few times and this is what she said.

Saoirse Ronan seems to say it as a sort of hybrid between Sare-sha and Ser-sha.

I'd say 'Seersha' I think (I've said it so many times when reading this thread that I'm doubting myself!) But it definitely differs by region so I'd class most pronunciations as a 'whatever way your hold your mouth' difference rather than one being right and the rest being wrong. Apart from Cersai. That's just wrong!!! Oh and Sayorse....

Irish speaker. SEERsha in Munster Irish. SAREsha in Ulster Irish.
I wish Saoirse Ronan had chosen a better example as it's based on a very regional mispronunciation of the word 'inertia'.
Sorcha is another name entirely.

Sorcha is pronounced SURRakha. It's roughly equivalent to Sarah.
Seoirse is pronounced SHOREsha. It's the Irish form of George.

Sorcha is pronounced more or less like surrika. Although I have met the odd Sorcha who pronounced it as sore-sha. But it's wrong, as wrong as pronouncing Murdoch as mur-dosh.

In Scotland I know 2 Saoirses. They are both seer-sha. DHs 2nd cousin is a seer-sha too in County Kildare

NotAMammy we just watched it for the first time today. Such a gorgeous film, and such a refreshing change from all the Pixar style stuff. I had a little cry at the end too 😅

I started this thread back in December! I'm now due in 2 weeks and if the baby is a girl she will be called Saoirse (seersha) Maria. I love it.
