I love the name Javier especially the nickname of javi, but a little concerned about other people's pronunciation issues, should I go ahead anyway and just keep referring loudly to Javier bardem to anyone who has issues 😀

People will say Ja vee er and not Hab ee ay
Depends how much it bothers you.

Pluto30 · 19/12/2016 21:30

I always thought it was hah-vee-air.

weebarra · 19/12/2016 21:35

Would you be thinking of the Spanish or French pronunciation?

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 21:35

Me too Pluto is vee air

Perhaps it depends On dialect/region of Spanish speaking countries/areas

Would say hav-ee-ay. Is that wrong?

I'd probably pronounce Javi as jav-ee, though. I wouldn't connect it with Javier at first glance.

Smitff · 19/12/2016 22:08

I'd go ahead anyway, once told people should be able to remember it.

Saying that, I would only use the name if the boy has some Spanish in him. It'd be a bit weird for a couple of Scousers (for e.g.) to pronounce their son's name have-ee-air!

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 22:43

I think the correct pronunciation is have ee air, but hav ee ay is fine.
Wow that was difficult with auto correct!!
And yes we'd say hav ee as a NN.
No Spanish here but I think it's a beautiful name and my son will undoubtedly be beautiful so reckon he can style it out 😀😀

Hav-ee-air to me. But I do speak Spanish. It's a great name!

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 22:46

Yeah i get what your saying smitff, legally he'd be Javier, but day to day at home and school etc it will be having, which I adore ❤️

me too. I would pronounce Javier the way you expect OP but if I saw the name Javi I might say Javee rather than Ha vee. Still I'd get it right the second time.

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 22:51

Grr 22.46 post: having - having/ hav ee

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 22:52

pieceofpurplesky · 19/12/2016 22:56

My Spanish friends son is hav-EE-ey nn hav-ee
They are a Spanish family, live in Spain.

I teach a hav-EE-at too
No hav-EE-air's here at all

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 22:56

Pallisers and rain, yeah i get where your coming from, will give it some thought and maybe introductions such as 'this is Javier, he goes by javi' feel like I'm totally overthinking this now!!!🤔

OP posts:
fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 22:59

How do your students who go by hav EE spell their names *purple'?

If he ever comes to Spain it is probably the most common name ever. Every second boy is a Javi.

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 23:09

Isn't javalito just a way of saying little Javier, rather than a nickname for throughout life?

I think I'm settled on Javier/javi I can't find anything g else I like nearly as much, although I could have a girl, she could be the Hebrew name having 😀

fooolofbeans · 19/12/2016 23:10

HAVI Jesus Christ auto correct

OP posts:
pieceofpurplesky · 20/12/2016 00:09

Javier / Javi

Smitff · 20/12/2016 03:56

I think the autocorrect issue would kill it for me personally 😄😂

babymouse · 20/12/2016 04:28

Only Spanish speakers will pronounce it correctly, but if that doesn't bother you go ahead.

fooolofbeans · 20/12/2016 06:57

😂😂😂😂😂 smitff

Only Spanish people would ever pronounce it completely correctly. I speak Spanish quite well but just cannot do to "J" sound properly.
On seeing Javier, I would immediately know to say it the Spanish way; despite (now I think about it) two Spanish friends calling their DS's "Javi", I think that, on seeing that written down in England, I'd think it was an Indian name and pronounce it Ja-vee.
