What nickname could I use?

It's my dearest grandmother's name - she is Gibalterian so no English connections to Princess Diana really, plus she's much much older than Diana was

Is it too 'queeny'?

Why do you need a nickname? If her name is Diana then just call her diana!

Princess Di died 20 odd years ago, this current generation and your DD's won't know who she is at all.

Why do people on Mumsnet like to pre select a nickname? If you like Diana call her Diana. A nickname may or may not develop. She may have one nickname within the family another amongst friends. She may just stay Diana without any nickname. I wouldn't use Diana but ha e nothing against it.

Why do you need a nickname? If you like Diana just call her Diana. The last thing I thought of when naming my dd was 'whats her nickname going to be?' like it was the law for her to have a nickname. I certainly discounted names because I don't like some potential shortenings (I.e Francesca, no way in he'll am I having a dd being called Frankie) but really?!

Athena isn't at all popular. It's around 340th most popular girls name according to Dark Greener

My name has a shortening that I don't like but people often use it for me (which I hate). You can't control nn, Di is the most obvious. I know a Diana who is known as Dee but that is because she hates being called Diana

I've only ever met one Athena; her father was Greek. She will be 15 now.

I don't think Annie is a natural shortening for Diana I think Di or Ann would be more likely.

Diana is a lovely name. I know a fairly young Diana and it really suits her. She's only ever known as Diana, and I've never thought of it being too much of a mouthful.

Hmm... I think if you don't like Di or Annie, you might need to rethink Diana. You can never predict or control what people will shorten her name to, or which shortening she will prefer herself, so if you don't like the most common shortening it might be better to find a different name.

And I agree with a PP, Athena is not even slightly popular!

I know a Diana. She's Di to most people, Dee to one and Diane to lazy people. Of the three she prefers Di and hates Diane. Occasionally someone is creative with the pronunciation - Deeanna. But she's never been called Anne, Annie, or Anna - knowing her personality, I suspect she might get a bit cross!

You could insist on people calling her Diana - gently correcting them until they get the message. My sister is Mandy, not Amanda, and people don't usually need to be told twice.

How about Dinah... Less likely to be Annie, and still close to your Grandmothers name ?

By the way, DD is Madeleine... and hardly anyone shortens it to Maddie..even though it seems to be universally accepted ! We all call her the full version.. ( Including teachers and school mates) ./.. you dont always have to have a nickname

Diana is lovely. I don't think it needs a nickname, but you could have Dani or Ana.

I know a little Diana who really suits her name. She's not Di, she's always called Diana.

The Diana I know has never had her name shortened.

Diana is a fine name but if you really don't want her to be nicknamed Di, probably at school then go for a different name.
