I like it - I pronounce it ell-EYE-as

TownMouseCuntMouse · 17/12/2016 19:03

ell-EYE-as

lovelearning · 17/12/2016 19:06

Elais

Pronounced ee-lie-iss, stress on the middle syllable.

Smile
CotswoldStrife · 17/12/2016 19:06

El-eye-as here too.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 17/12/2016 19:30

I would pronounce it ee-lye-us. I know 2 (todlers and teen) who pronounce it this way. It's a great name and I love the nn Eli.

Heratnumber7 · 17/12/2016 19:33

It's Welsh. It's ell-EYE_ass

MyBootsAreMuddy · 17/12/2016 19:37

Is it Welsh? I thought it was Greek form the Hebrew name Elijah?

NannyR · 17/12/2016 19:38

e-LIE-uss, sort of so it rhymes with Tobias. I did know a child once called Elias who pronounced it more like elly-ass, with the stress on the last syllable, it didn't sound quite right to me.

Hamsolo · 17/12/2016 19:39

Sort of like uh-LIE-us

The first syllable is quite hard to write down.

strawberrypenguin · 17/12/2016 19:46

El-eye-us I like it!

BayaGoji · 17/12/2016 20:09

el - EE - us.

TroysMammy · 17/12/2016 20:11

I know an Asian man who is called Elias and it's pronounced Ee-lee-ass.

Pemba · 17/12/2016 20:12

Ell-EYE-us is what I've always heard I think. Maybe different in other countries? Yes it's nice.

ppandj · 17/12/2016 20:14

I know an Elias and they pronounce it El-ee-yas. It really suits him, it's a lovely name in my opinion.

monkeywrench · 17/12/2016 20:46

Yep, I am in Germany, it is common here, said Ee-lee-ass. I like it.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/12/2016 20:47

Ell Eye Ass definitely.

It's OK.

moggle · 17/12/2016 20:50

I love this name but all these differences of opinion on pronunciation mean I don't think I could use it :-( I always assumed it was Ul-EYE-us but I prefer the Ellie-us pronunciation (like Elliot but with an s). Anyway we have an Eliza now so I don't think Elias could ever be on the cards!

SuffolkBumkin · 17/12/2016 20:52

I worked with an Elias he said it el-ee-us. Beautiful name. Wanted it for ds, but could worker was Hmm

3catsandcounting · 17/12/2016 21:09

My very Welsh, and sadly departed, uncle was Elias. Definitely 'ell-eye-us' in his parts.

3catsandcounting · 17/12/2016 21:10

or rather 'ell-eye-ass'!

pumpkinpie5 · 17/12/2016 21:12

My friends little boy is called Elias. Her husband is Greek. They pronounce it El- lie-as.

Pluto30 · 17/12/2016 21:50

Eh-LIE-us.

Stress on the second syllable (the lie sound is the same as the word lie, like "lie down").

I don't like it but I have an irrational hate of the nickname Eli, so that's likely why. I do prefer it to Elijah, however.

ViewBasket · 17/12/2016 22:03

Eh-LYE-us.

Eli is nice as a nickname, although it's also a separate name in its own right.

fluffypenguinbelly · 17/12/2016 22:10

I've taught an English El eye us and an Egyptian El ee ass

1horatio · 17/12/2016 22:11

If I consciously tried to give in an 'English' pronunciation I'd say e-lie-us.

But I'd probably say e-lee-us. That's the pronunciation you'd get in any German speaking country.
