Margot or Margaux (or Margo)

Personally, I'm a fan of Margot - but OH is adamant that it looks like maggot. He prefers to drop the t, but I don't like the way it looks at all. Any thoughts?

No, you need the T. Margo is a sixty-something country and western singer who is Daniel O'Donnel's sister, and Margaux is wine. Margot with a t is lovely.

Smitff · 12/12/2016 00:14

Margo? Margaux? Qu'est-ce que c'est?!

No. it's either Marguerite (Margot for short) or straight to Margot.

MargotLovedTom · 12/12/2016 00:17

Definitely Margot Wink.

Margot. How's it's meant to be.

reindeerbitesback · 12/12/2016 00:37

You are all wonderful. I can't wait to tell OH that you all agree with me and be very smug about it

Margot

GerundTheBehemoth · 12/12/2016 06:41

I like it without the t. As in Margo Leadbetter from The Good Life or Margo-from-Despicable-Me.

MargotLovedTom · 12/12/2016 06:48

www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/goodlife/

Mrs Leadbetter was Margot with a t, according to the BBC.

Gruffalosfriend · 12/12/2016 08:23

I'm going to disagree and say that unless you live in a French speaking country, many people will pronounce the name Margot phonetically as Mar-gott. It's a fairly common name and pronunciation in Germany for example.

Margo avoids this problem and will also make life much easier for your dd (esp when she learns to write her name!).

Barefootcontessa84 · 12/12/2016 09:30

Definitely not Margaux - it's a wine - Margot Hemingway ironically changed her name to this because she was an alcoholic.

PoldarksBreeches · 12/12/2016 09:34

No way, Margot is popular enough in the UK for people not to say Margott. Definitely not Margaux.

FfionFlorist · 12/12/2016 10:14

Margot

Bauble16 · 12/12/2016 10:18

None. All too old lady like tbh. It might be a regional thing but where I'm from its very much the name of an older lady.

GerundTheBehemoth · 12/12/2016 12:34

Margot - she was definitely Margo with no t in the Good Life books!

LarrytheCucumber · 12/12/2016 12:36

Margaux looks pretentious.

Gruffalosfriend · 12/12/2016 13:48

But Mar-gott is not a wrong pronunciation. It is just the non-French way of saying it.

MiriAmmerman · 23/12/2016 11:32

Just not Margaux. Margaux Hemingway was called Margot, and then changed the spelling when she found out that her parents conceived her after a bottle of Chateau Margaux.
Margot is the traditional spelling.

BayaGoji · 23/12/2016 13:04

Margot 100%

1horatio · 23/12/2016 14:11

Depends on where you live/are planning to live. Mar-gott is the correct German pronunciation and I could imagine some people in the U.K. would pronounce it in a smiliar way.

There wouldn't be an issue like this with Margo.

RortyCrankle · 23/12/2016 17:50

Definitely Margot - it's lovely.

BestIsWestofBedfordFalls · 23/12/2016 17:53

My favourite name. Margot. Not Margaux.

Staranise123 · 23/12/2016 18:39

Margo

If you spell it Margot many (non French) will pronounce it as Mar-gott! Very common in Germany

Also, why choose the French spelling when you can choose an English one? Will be much easier for your dd when she learns to write.

Buttercupsandaisies · 23/12/2016 23:35

There's no way anyone in the uk would say mar-got. Honestly margot is pretty common in media etc even if seldom used. Margot Robbie is everywhere these days

AbernathysFringe · 24/12/2016 01:53

I think your DH has just ruined a name I really liked. :(
Margeaux has been seen in New Orleans....
