So I've been dead set for what seems like forever that for a girl I like Lyra and for a boy, Rudy. However, have now confused the living daylights out of myself and OH by throwing a few more we both like into the mix... Which do you guys think goes well with a McK surname? (I love Gray as middle name for both genders)

Girls:
Lyra
Juno
Cora
Erin
Dakota

Boys:
Rudy
Cayde
Cohen

I think you should stick with Lyra and Rudy. Lyra has a lovely meaning and is a great character. It's on my list! I don't think Erin is popular? I know one! Juno I like but just think of the film and Cora is ok. Do you like Coral? Or Coraline?
Lara?

I like your three top runners. Cora makes me think of Tron Legacy - the Cora in that is super cool.

Why Gray though? It was my old surname and I think very dull. Is it a family surname perhaps?

I get the film link with Juno- however, she is pretty awesome as a character so I don't really mind.

Lyra came from the fact I adored the His Dark Materials books when I was young! Unfortunately, I can't get past Lycra now so it's vetoed.

I like short names so Coraline wouldn't work for me and Coral is a bit pretty pretty- I like the simplicity of Cora.

I'm glad Rudy is getting the thumbs up!

I like the film Juno and the name.

Seriously. Juno is super quirky, upbeat and loving. Her relationship with the adoptive mother (not sure what she's called) is great. That kid is trying to do the best in a difficult situation. (And please don't read this as some kind of pro-life argument, I actually like that the film is so judgement free!)

It's an unusual name (I like that it's clearly feminine and still has an o ending, which gives it this upbeat and crisp meaning!), it isn't too 'heavy' (I wouldn't call a child Hecate or Poseidon, but maybe that's just me...) and her mythological role is also very impressive.

Wasn't she the queen of the heavens and goddess of... finance and marriage?

Btw. I love the name gray.

Maybe because (in my work) things are never black or white. So, I've actually quite struggled with the fact that some names mean 'most holy', 'pure' or 'light'. I know, it's just the name's meaning. But it just felt weird, to me. It's just too much to live up to (and I'm probably being very silly!)

Juno was indeed the Roman queen of the heavens- she was the lead goddess of the Roman Empire, but with a specific tilt towards protection and towards women (she came from the Greek goddess Hera) So not a bad namesake at all!

And you're right- the Juno in the film is strong, quirky and intelligent- all characteristics I would want for my child anyway!

I like your thought on Gray too. Very true.

Cora is my favourite for my upcoming girl but was sadly vetoed by OH. Juno was also on my list and vetoed! So I think either excellent choices 😊

hoddtastic · 13/12/2016 16:19

cayde is awful, sorry, it's one letter away from Kayde.

don't really like Lyra, like Lara, Lila, Clara, Leila but not Lyra for some reason?

10Betty10 · 13/12/2016 17:43

Hodd- we have scrapped both Cade and Lyra
