Have thrown spanner in the works- was happy with Lyra or Rudy...

So I've been dead set for what seems like forever that for a girl I like Lyra and for a boy, Rudy. However, have now confused the living daylights out of myself and OH by throwing a few more we both like into the mix... Which do you guys think goes well with a McK surname? (I love Gray as middle name for both genders)

Girls:
Lyra
Juno
Cora
Erin
Dakota

Boys:
Rudy
Cayde
Cohen

I like Rudy, Cora and Juno

10Betty10 · 09/12/2016 20:21

Bingthing- go for it! I adore Gray as a girls middle, is really simple but different.

keekaw · 09/12/2016 21:14

I don't think you are being silly to think Cayde sounds chavvy btw

10Betty10 · 09/12/2016 21:20

Keekaw- it is isn't it!! Also, the meaning of 'lumpy and rotund'!!!!! I was absolutely gasping when I saw that Gahahaha

I'd scrap Erin if I were you and in Ireland it is a brand of soup. In fact I would say stick with Lyra and Rudy. There was a thread recently about Cohen and someone added an interesting link to some of the reactions/issues around using it was a forename.

10Betty10 · 09/12/2016 21:47

Midsomer- I'll check that thread out. Didn't think Cohen would get weird reactions- I know it's from a Jewish background, but that works for me as I'm of Jewish descent (although am not religious myself). I'm still massively favouring Rudy for a boy anyway to be honest!

I reckon I'm scrapping Lyra as had not really thought through the 'Lycra' and 'liar' insult options!!

buttercup54321 · 09/12/2016 21:51

Kaiden for a boy. Lilah for a girl. And Grace is better for a girls middle name than Gray.

10Betty10 · 09/12/2016 21:53

I'll be honest, Lilah Grace just isn't my cup of tea. I hate Rose/May/Grace type middle names! Thanks though 😊

I love Lyra and Juno.

But Rudy is really cool!!

Grey is cool! At least you aren't in love with the name Lycoris... 🙈

10Betty10 · 09/12/2016 22:10

Haha yeah I feel it would be impossible to grow up to be anything other than incredibly cool with Rudy. I reckon that we will be definitely going with that.

Cayde is now officially off the table- another meaning of it was 'runt of the litter'!!!!)

It's between Cora and Juno for girl at present- I just can't get Lycra out of my head now!

I had to look up Lycoris- it is a plant apparently. It makes me think of Lycan as in werewolves!

OP posts:
SpunkyMummy · 09/12/2016 22:18

Yup, it's a plant, which wouldn't be too bad (beautiful flowers).

But they have religious and cultural meaning in Japan. And are associated with graveyards and death (or more like the afterlife/the other shore...). Oops?

I don't even know why I know the name! I'm actually mad that I love it so much!! And kind of furious DH isn't opposing it more fervently!

Uhm, back to you. Rudy is quirky, a bit vintage-y but not overly elaborate and sounds very crisp. And the meaning is awesome :)!!

Juno is gorgeous. Cora is beautiful but a very common name imo (I know a few Coras).

10Betty10 · 09/12/2016 22:26

Well if you are of the goth persuasion then werewolves and graveyards could be a good association😜 (No judgment- I am pale as a sheet, black hair, a perma black wardrobe and a love for shouty metal, so technically I should be calling my kids Poe and Wednesday.) I can't figure out if Lycoris is a girl or boy name though? And what would it end up shortening to (3 syllable names usually end up being shortened I've noticed!)

OH is in love with Juno as name, I love it, but get a really positive feeling about Cora. I don't know of any Coras, do you mind saying which region you are from? We are Midlands so maybe it isn't one that has boomed here!

SpunkyMummy · 09/12/2016 23:14

London.

Nope, not goth at all. and I don't even really like black clothing. And my hair isn't black either (although I do like black hair).

It would be the middle name for our daughter... the meaning is twilight and I have always really liked these hours. Plus, that's when she was born... 🙈

Cora is beautiful, it's honestly very lovely imo. I personally simply prefer Juno but both names are great options.

LouisvilleLlama · 10/12/2016 01:17

Only mildly like Erin out of the lists

10Betty10 · 10/12/2016 08:03

I reckon as a middle name it would work- simply because then there is no shortening based confusion when they get to school. What would you have as a first name? And the twilight meaning is really lovely, especially with time of birth.

It's hard isn't it! I think Cora and Juno are pretty much equally as nice!

Have scrapped Erin now.

This thread has really helped us whittle the list down! It's great! (Especially as my favs are winning hahaha)

CakeRattleandRoll · 10/12/2016 08:04

Cora McK... sounds great.

Jooni · 10/12/2016 09:11

I'm in East Mids too and we have a Juno!

Love Cora and Lyra as well, and I don't personally know or know of any kids with those names round these parts.

It has to be Rudy for a boy, not a fan of those other options at all. If you like alliteration (I do too), I definitely think Cora McK... for a girl is much nicer.

10Betty10 · 10/12/2016 10:12

Jooni- is your Juno classed as quite unusual name wise? I've def never heard it in these parts haha

Am torn between Juno and Cora. Am sure we will decide eventually!

I'm positive on Rudy so thanks Smile

katonic · 10/12/2016 10:19

Love all your girls names and I will admit to loving Dakota, it's got a really nice sound and would go with McK as a surname! How about Erica or Ramona instead of Erin? Also Indiana?

Namechangeemergency · 10/12/2016 10:29

I have a Rudy.
Its a great name

10Betty10 · 10/12/2016 10:33

Katatonic- I adore Ramona but OH has vetoed- he thinks it's me indulging my love of punk haha! He also is the only guy ever to not want a kid named after Indiana Jones! (I love the name Indy for a boy)
Can't do Erica- knew an awful one growing up and she still lives locally so bad connotations!

Name change- Rudy is looking like a dead cert! Have always loved it. Good taste you have there! Wink

Rudy is my favourite from your boys list and Cora from the girls list. Love both but not keen on any of your other choices.

WyfOfBathe · 10/12/2016 23:51

I love Rudy and Cohen from your boys list, and Cora & Erin for girls. I think that Rudy Gray Mck & Cora Gray Mck sound best.

I don't really like Juno because of the film, and I wouldn't know how to pronounce or spell Cayde (would Cayden or Cain be an option?)

10Betty10 · 11/12/2016 07:56

Rudy and Cora are my favourites. OH has agreed on Rudy- although he is still massively pushing for Juno (although he does like Cora)

OP posts:
Rinmybell · 11/12/2016 19:33

Rudy and Cora are my favourites.
Erin is a great name too Wink
I can't get passed the film when it comes to Juno.
