Is Haydn/Hayden 'chavvy'?

We love Haydn/Hayden, but is it seen as 'chavvy'? I don't want people to judge his name on the school register, etc.

He would be Haydn/Hayden Alexander.

Thanks.

It's kind of chavvy, yes.

But I still think it's a really cute name.

I don't know any but wouldn't consider it chavvy at all. Jayden/Kayden I would, but not Hayden for some reason!

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2016 20:55

Hayden is a surname and I don't see it as any different to other surnamey first names.

As for 'chavvy', it's a particularly nasty way to describe a name.

OP, Hayden is fine.

Haden (spelt that way) is a family name on my OH's side. No chavvy associations for me.

Hayden gets lumped with Jayden/Kayden which supposedly have some ancient Biblical roots but are rarely heard in naice prep schools.

Haydn as in the composer would fall into "surnames as first names" which has oodles of precedent but is also looked down on. Would also be mistaken for Hayden, so get both lots of sneering.

To honour Haydn the composer, use Joseph!

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2016 21:25

I agree, 'chavvy' is really offensive. I challenge it every time I see it on here.

LOL Navy I did say rare and not extinct!

"Chav" is a horrible word used within a horrible mindset, but it's not unreasonable to ask about the class connotations of a name, given how entrenched the class system is in the UK.

I know usual thinks that is bollocks and I agree it ought to be, but the fact remains that it does exist.

We deliberately avoided names we thought were "too posh" for the circles our DC were likely to be moving in during peak name-teasing phases (including names I reeeeeally liked, notably Sebastian, and the posher nicknames for normal names, eg Kit/Kester instead of Chris).

heateallthebuns · 06/12/2016 21:37

How would you want it pronounced? Like the composer? Not chavvy as such, but seems a bit contrived?

It's a traditional Welsh name spelt Haydn. What's wrong with that?

midsomermurderess · 06/12/2016 21:46

I too find 'chavvy' so objectionable. I suspect the people who use here it have only one acceptable name for girls and that's Emily. I can't be bothered to speculate on what they like for boy's names, but it will be something safe, below the radar and that won't have any one doubting their middle class credentials that they seem so desperate to bolster.

TSSDNCOP · 06/12/2016 21:47

Haha it is the middle name of FIl, Dh and DS and if super-Hyacinth MIL heard it said it was chavvy she'd ave ya Grin

Iknowwhatyoumeanaboutthathat · 06/12/2016 21:57

There's a bit at school with this name and his parents are certainly not in any way chavvy.
