DD1 is due in early February and we've whittled our name shortlist down to the following but chronic indecision has now set in and I feel like I'm going name-blind! Please help!

Middle name would likely be either Emily or Christina (both family names).

Margot
Edith (nn Edie)
Ava
Daisy
Hazel
Lily

Thanks :)!

I wouldn't call Edith 'naff' or 'cutesy'. Or any of those names. How rude.

ViewBasket · 08/12/2016 19:08

I like Ava, Daisy and Lily best.

Edith - OK
Margot - harsh and faddy, sorry!
Hazel - I've never liked this, but don't know why.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 08/12/2016 19:13

I love Edith, I like Margot. Daisy, Ava & Lily are nice but common (in the nice sense of the word). I don't like Hazel - reminds me of hazelnut yogurts I used to eat as a child.

I also like Elsie if you're looking at old fashioned names.

MissJSays · 08/12/2016 19:47

Love Ava and Lilly

EsmesBees · 08/12/2016 19:50

I love Hazel! Plus, genetics are weird things, who knows what colour hair she'll have.

MissJSays · 08/12/2016 19:52

Also, people are saying Lily, Ava and Daisy are really popular. I would agree but come to think about it I work in a nursery and over the last 4 years we haven't had a single Ava, Daisy and only recently gained a Lilly. We aren't a particularly small nursery either, atm we have around 80 children spread across 2 sites.

Interesting!

MitzyLeFrouf · 08/12/2016 21:11

I like Margot best.

Edith is quite a dreary name, can't understand it's resurgence at all. Hazel is a kind of Brenda type name for me, sensible but unappealing.

ChewedUpRope · 08/12/2016 21:32

I like Margot, Ava and Hazel.

ChewedUpRope · 08/12/2016 21:33

Especially Hazel because it's so underused.

dotdotdotmustdash · 08/12/2016 23:22

Cosmicglitterplug I wouldn't call Edith 'naff' or 'cutesy'. Or any of those names. How rude.
I am so sorry if you feel offended. Obviously I'll amend my language. I've turned to the Cambridge English dictionary for help.

Naff - not stylish or fashionable
Cutesy - cute to a sentimental or mawkish extent

Therefore I believe the name Edith to be neither stylish nor fashionable, and veers towards being cute to a sentimental or mawkish extent.

That better?

Hope you go for Hazel OP!

Cosmicglitterpug · 09/12/2016 06:42

Not offended. And I know the meaning of naff and cutesy thanks. Names like Princess-Diamond could be classed as such I suppose. Not strong Anglo-Saxon names like Edith. As you were.

Pemba · 09/12/2016 18:11

Cosmic I agree, I don't really think anyone else would classify Edith as 'naff' or 'cutesy' must be a first! It's a strong name (although I am not a particular fan to be honest).

Daisy or Lily could possibly be called cutesy, although I like them. I would reserve cutesy for something like Trixiebelle or one of the hyphenated names that are popular, like Ava-Mae.

10Betty10 · 09/12/2016 18:29

Edith Christina- I think this sounds like the name of a really elegant woman.

I massively struggle to take adult Daisy's seriously to be honest- I know that sounds awful.

I'm a teacher and therefore meet a lot of kids- Lily is everywhere. And I genuinely have 2 with younger sisters called Ava.

funkygiraffe1980 · 10/12/2016 12:24

I like Ava and Margot the best from your list. Even though Ava seems popular, I haven't come across any in my dd nursery/preschool.

I love Edith. I struggle to say Edith Christina though, I sort of lisp the S in Christina because I've just said the TH in Edith rather than because I've got a lisp.

mathanxiety · 11/12/2016 01:07

Love Edith and Hazel. I think Christina and Emily would go with both as a MN.

Margot is fine.

The others are all very of the moment and will date. (Ava, Daisy and Lily).
