We have a long (4 syllable) surname. Is Ruth a bit TOO old fashioned?

It does seem old fashioned, but isn't old fashioned 'in'.

Cucumber5 · 29/11/2016 07:22

It's nice.

Nick name Ruthie

duskonthelawn · 29/11/2016 07:25

I really like Ruth. It's a pretty name and all the Ruth's I've known were lovely 😊

knaffedoff · 29/11/2016 07:28

I like it Grin

KlingybunFistelvase · 29/11/2016 07:52

Nice!

Systamex · 29/11/2016 07:57

Both beautiful, timeless names!

Wishfulmakeupping · 29/11/2016 07:59

I love Frances I'm not keen on Ruth

CockneyViv · 29/11/2016 08:04

Ruth Frances sounds a little American 'old money ' but I think Ruth is a pretty name

Allovertheworld16 · 29/11/2016 08:06

I know lots of Ruths in their 50s and 60s. Sorry but they are all a type, very staid.

SpecialStains · 29/11/2016 08:10

I really love it. Those are on my girls names list (I had a boy). It's a really nice and solid name.

Other names I liked were Rachel, Hazel and Martha.

Best wishes with the baby. Smile

margiebargie · 29/11/2016 08:11

Sensible/solid.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 29/11/2016 08:17

Eek, I really don't like it, it's such a plain name to me, BUT it isn't my child, so if you love it, go for it.

SpotTheDuck · 29/11/2016 08:24

I like both names, but I don't like how the "th" of the Ruth sort of runs into the "f" of frances....

MollyHuaCha · 29/11/2016 08:44

They are lovely names. My only hesitation would be if you live in an area where the local accent often pronounces 'th' as 'f'.

Marmalade782 · 29/11/2016 08:55

Thanks for the feedback all! I'm actually in Australia, not the UK - so the pronounciation shouldn't be too much of an issue. Our second choice was Ruth Elizabeth.

I love it, but then I am biased. Frances is a family name and my mum, me and dd all have it as middle name, and my first name begins with R!

marmiteandcheeseplease · 29/11/2016 09:05

I love the name Ruth, its my daughters middle name. Only reason it wasn't her first is its my mil's name! Frances goes very well with it, more so then Elizabeth in my view.

Vixxfacee · 29/11/2016 09:07

Both awful.

QueenMortificado · 29/11/2016 09:08

It's lovely, if you're giving birth to a grandma

That said, it will probably be really fashionable in a few years so maybe you're just getting ahead of the curve

PunkAssMoFo · 29/11/2016 09:14

Ruth is quite a harsh, blunt sounding name. I obviously have different tastes to you though, as I find Elizabeth dull. I much prefer Eliza or Beth. Frances is lovely though.

orangepudding · 29/11/2016 09:17

Ruth is a harsh name, really don't like it. Frances is ok, Elizabeth is lovely

KoalaDownUnder · 29/11/2016 09:20

I find Ruth very hard and plodding.

NannyR · 29/11/2016 09:25

Ruth is a lovely classic name. I know of two Ruth's, one a toddler and one who's eleven -they both get Ruthie.

FlaptheWings · 29/11/2016 09:28

I'm a Ruth, and have PMT, and now feel quite sad after all the comments here.Sad

OP, I think it's the sort of name that has never been hugely popular, but will always be around. I have always known of maybe one other Ruth in any school, workplace etc.

If you love it, go for it!Smile

BakeOffBiscuits · 29/11/2016 09:31

I like Ruth!

I do t like it with Francis though. Elizabeth is much better as a middle name.
