It's for a boy - I don't look at it as a girls name, but I know some do, so can we not have it with our surname?

James is beautiful name. Its timeless and classic and works on everyone from a new born baby to a 100 year old man. Plus there's plenty of good nn opportunities.
However I don't like it with the surname Rose. Not because. Its sounds feminine, but because. There's too many S sounds.
I mean let's face it any male name with a girl's name as a surname has the risk of sounding effeminate.

LestatVonGaribaldi · 18/11/2016 17:45

James has been a top 10 boys name for blimming years.

Hulababy · 18/11/2016 17:48

James is a classic boys names.
Whilst it has been used as a girls name - referred to on MN thread previously - it is not commonly used as a girl's name.

I've been teaching about 20 years and never yet come across a girl called James.

Some celebrities, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, called their baby girl James last year but even they say it is a boys name (named after a grandfather) and that was one thing they liked - having a boys name herself (Blake)

strawberrypenguin · 18/11/2016 17:49

Yes you can. In fact I actually know one irl (he's an adult) as far as I know he's never had any problems with it. James is absolutely a boys name and a well known one

Yes, of course you can OP.

BackforGood · 18/11/2016 18:44

James is a classic boys name.
Nobody in real life has ever called a girl James.
There will be no confusion.
Lovely name. Classic, timeless, common enough that is easy to spell and pronounce but never overused. Perfect.

Sophronia · 18/11/2016 18:48

James has been a boys name for a very long time. It's a lovely classic.

raviolidreaming · 18/11/2016 18:49

In the real world James is only a boys name

Agreed!

James is a tradionally a boy's name. I don't see it as unisex at all to be honest.

"You can paint a horse with black and white stripes but it doesn't make it a zebra."

I love this.
adds to list of great phrases to remember

itsbetterthanabox · 18/11/2016 23:24

I know an adult man James rose.
Never thought of it as a unisex name at all.
In the uk James is a traditionally male name and rose is the surname. It's a nice one too!

RustyBear · 18/11/2016 23:38

We considered it for DS - we have the same surname - but I didn't like the repeated 's' sound.

I think virtually everyone would consider James to be a boys name.

It's been the only name to consistently be in the top 10-20 boys names (in England and Wales) for the last 100 years or so IIRC.

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/11/2016 01:06

James is a classic name, I really wouldn't worry.

I wouldn't choose it to go with Rose though, simply because I don't think two one-syllable names, both ending in a hard 's', sound great together.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 19/11/2016 01:41

In the real world James is only a boys name

Yes!

Honestly OP, how many girls called James have you met? Now compare that to the amount of men and boys called James that you've met. James must be the most commonly used name for boys for the last two centuries.

A Hollywood couple calling their daughter James does not make it a unisex name.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 19/11/2016 02:15

The only (minor) drawback I can see is that James can be a surname too, so there could be some Rose, James confusion. But that's not likely to be a problem very often.

ThunderR0ad78 · 19/11/2016 07:56

I have a James - it's a boys name!

To say otherwise is just ridiculous! Thomas and Matthew will be unisex names next!! 😳

People are entitled to call their baby what they like but James is a boys name!

This world has gone mad 😊

James Rose is lovely!

My James is a James Edward, do you plan on having a middle name?
