It's a name I read in a book years ago but always liked. For a girl. Just me?

Not heard it before. I presume it rhymes with Noah and rower if you have a non-rhotic accent like me. I think it's all right, but repeating "it's Noah with an R" might become tedious after a while, especially for a girl.

Pipilangstrumpf · 08/11/2016 11:09

I've never met one either. But I think Roah sounds fine for a girl and nothing like Noah, for a start they start with a very different sound. So, yes, why not?

Lorelei76 · 08/11/2016 11:10

oh dear
is it just me thinking "have they been named for the Katy Perry song"?

MackerelOfFact · 08/11/2016 11:15

It is pronounced 'rower'? I don't like it, sorry. Rhea or Rhona are OK though?

Chinlo · 08/11/2016 11:29

True. I guess by the same token Rilliam sounds nothing like William, Remma sounds nothing like Emma, and Ramuel sounds nothing like Samuel.

I advise you against trying your hand at poetry.

Reminds me of the nasty surprise of opening up a fresh mackerel only to find a bubbling mass of eggs (roe) lodged inside

GinIsIn · 08/11/2016 11:47

I knew a boy Roa, but he was Indonesian.

Tarttlet · 08/11/2016 11:50

It sounds like something Scooby Doo would say...

Chinlo · 08/11/2016 11:54

Tarttlet Grin Grin Grin

Ilovenannyplum · 08/11/2016 12:01

Is it pronounced like 'rower' like a person in a boat?

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 08/11/2016 12:03

Makes me think 'ruh roh' as in comedic cartoon dogs.

DramaAlpaca · 08/11/2016 12:12

Grin at Tarttlet

No, OP, it's not good.

Yawninghippo · 08/11/2016 12:13

It's pronounced like 'Rower' to rhyme with Noah. I just thought it was quite unusual but still nicely simple.

Sorry but I think it looks like a typo Blush

ViewBasket · 08/11/2016 12:28

Could you use Rowena, with Roah as nickname?

Yawninghippo · 08/11/2016 12:34

Rowena is on my list, just not keen on the 'wee' sound in the middle. Thought this was just quite sweet and simple. Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Lorelei76 · 08/11/2016 12:37

Rhona? Rhonda?

I am "blessed" with an unusual name, so that factors into my view (i.e. it's a mahousive pain in the butt).

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 08/11/2016 12:45

Rhona would be a good second to Rowena, no?

DramaAlpaca · 08/11/2016 12:46

Rowenna instead of Rowena would avoid that 'wee' sound. Lovely name, too.

Yawninghippo · 08/11/2016 12:59

I'm not too keen on Rhona, but Rowenna is pretty! If Roah is a bit dismal, another of my choices is Morgana, any better?

OP posts:
Raines100 · 08/11/2016 13:41

Morgana? And I suppose you'll have Fay as the middle name?

ViewBasket · 08/11/2016 13:50

Ria?

agadoodoodoo · 08/11/2016 13:53

I LOVE Roah! I've never heard it before. It's beautiful.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but if I pronounce it like I would 'Noah' in my (Scottish, regional) accent, then it doesn't sound like 'rower' - it's more of an 'ah' sound rather than 'ur' at the end.

SpotTheDuck · 08/11/2016 13:55

Morgana always sounds witchy to me, not sure why!

I like rowenna or Rowena and roah would work well as a nickname for either
